Description

J. A. CROSS.
NAIL.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 27, 1920.

m STATES JEROME A. (moss, or FULTONVILLE, NEW Y0.
NAIL.
Application filed May 27,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JEROME A. CROSS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fultonville, in the county. of Montgomery and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nails; and I do hereby declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the 1nvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a nail, or other form of driven fastening, provided with an auxiliary head, by means of which the nail may be conveniently withdrawn by the use of a claw hammer, or like tool, and the nail constituting my invention is particularly applicable for use in temporary building structures,.such as wooden frames for concrete work, scaffolding, etc., the lumber composing which being taken down and reused upon other work in another place;
The ordinary way of driving the boards from the joists or timbers to which they are nailed, splits, breaksand destroys much of the lumber. 'By the use of the nail of my invention, the necessity for driving the boards off from the joists, or timbers to "which they arenailed, as customarily practised, is dispensed with, since the nail of my invention may be quickly and easily removed by a. claw hammer, or the like, leavingdthe lumber in good condition to be reuse Several exemplary forms of the embodiment of my invention, capable of carrying out the underlying principles thereof, are
disclosed in the accompanying drawing.
Briefly described Figure 1 is a sectional view through two pieces of wood, showing the application of my nail thereto, said nail being shown partially in section;
Figure 2 is a sectional view on the line 2,
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Feb. 21, 19%2.

2 of Figure 1, looking in the direction of the arrows;
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 1, showing a slightly modified form of nail,
Figure 4 is a view in top plan of the nail shown in Figure 3, showing fra mentarily the board through which said naiIis driven.
Referring now in detail to the drawing, and first to Figures 1 and 2 thereof:
1 designates an ordinary nail provided, as
usual, with a sharpened extremity 2 and provided, at the opposite end, with a head 4.
3 designates what may be termed an auxiliary head, adapted to contact with the'upper surface of the board A when the nail is driven home, and, while this auxiliary head may be constructed in many forms, I prefer to form it as a-washer 5 having a concave base 3'. In use, the washer is placed on the board A, and the shank of the nail slipped through the washer, the nail being driven home until the head 4 contacts with the reduced upper portion 5,
Since the nail head 4 is thus held in spaced relation to the board A, a claw-hammer may readily engage beneath the head in withdrawing the nail, when it is desired to knock down the temporary or other structure in connection with which the nail is used.
Referring, now, to Figures 3 and 4 of the drawing:
The nail 1', herein disclosed, resembles exteriorly the nail shown in Figures 1 and 2, but in this case the nail is made with an auxiliary head 4' integral with the head 3' and the shank of the nail, and is provided with a neck 5' interposed between the heads 3' and 4'.
What I claim to be new is:
The combination with a nail having a head, of a washer having a concave under side and a neck upstanding thereon with an opening appropriately proportioned to permit the passage of a nail, said neck being less in diameter than the hea In testimony whereof I hereunto afix my
