EMBROIDERY NEEDLE.
3 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS H. WEBSTER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of St. Louis, Mo., have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in an Embroidery which the following is a specification.
This inventionrelates to improvements in an embroidery needle, the same consisting adjustable gauge, a detachable needle and ameans for holding the gauge and needle inaset position with in thehandle.
The object is to construct a neat, simple,- cheap and unique device for embroidery pur poses, the same being. so arranged as to "permit any sizeof needleto be inserted and easily adjusted and clamped in the handle, and a guard likewise adjusted in thehandle and over the needle to regulate the distance the needle is to be passed through the material, which likewise regulates the loopof the thread-or yarn to be formed on the op posite side of the material, through whichthe needle is passed. a
Figure 1, is a perspective view of -my com-.
Fig. 2, is a detail perspective view of one of the needles made use of.
Fig. 3, is a detail perspective view of the gauge. I Fig.4, is a side viewv of my invention." Fig. 5, is a bottom plan view of the same. Fig. 6,'is a central sectional'view of the same. a j v Fig. 7 is an enlar ed; cross-sectional view taken on the line 7-3 of Fig. 6.
Fig. 8, is a perspective view of theneedle showing a modified form of supporting I I In the general construction of my inven-.
tion I provide a handle 9, the same being'of tubular construction and on the base is provided a clamp 10, which is in any manner fastened thereto. In the member 9 is provided a hole 11 through which is placed a tightening screw 12, said screw being provided with a knurled head 13, by whlch the screw can be operated. Adjacent to this hole I rovide a second hole 14 and through this ho e is passed the thread or yarn whlch is in turn fed to the point of the needle. In' the hollow handle and inserted through the free open end 15' isplaced a gauge 16, this is constructed of a strip of material comprising an elongated fiat section 17 ,and an Specification of Letters Patent- P t te r Application filed November 4, 1921-. Serial No. 512,700.
I claim 1s:
.up-turned end 18, the same bein provided with an elongated slot 19, throug this slot is placed the screw 12, this gauge is supported on an internally screw-threaded nut'2O turnin when the screwis adjusted.
On t e top-of the gau e and between it of such size as to prevent the same from and the up or inner sur ace of the handleis inserted t e needle 21, and said needle is supported in position'between the gauge and the handle bymeans of its shank 22 which is provided with a slot 23, which passes over the screw. 12 and it is also. provided with a hole- 24, which corresponds and registers with the hole 14 of the handle. The blade 25 of the needle is passed through the slot of the gauge but under the up-turned end 18. This up-turned end acts asa limit for the insertion of the needle through the goods.
' The shank of the needle is constructed to have two vertical 'walls 26, terminating into horizontal flanges 27, b this structure considerable tension may e put on the screw .thereby firmly clamping the needle in. po-
sition between the gauge'and the handle, at I the same time supportingthe gauge and preventing the handle from spreading, owlng to the fact that its edge'28 is unfastehed.
I may, if desired, constrii'ct a needle of a shank" as that indicated b the .numeral 29, Fig. 8, in this instance t e shank is semicircular in form instead of a rectangular structure as that'shown'inFig. 2.
When a: needle is inserted in position and then clamped in. the handle the thread or yarn is'passed through the opening 14, and
then throughthe eye of the needleas shown by dotted l1nes in Fig.6. r
The device is constructed with an assortmoved from its clamped position and 'an-" other needle is inserted in its place and by tightening the-screw the same is held in ri id position in the handle.
aving fully-described my invention what .ment ofcneedlesj of various lengths and.
1. A needle of the character described the handle and slipped over the clamping screw, a thread supporting eye formed in the handle and in they needle through which the thread is passed, substantially as speci= fied.
2. A needle of the character described comprising a handle, a gauge, a detachable needle, a clamping screw supported by the I handle and assing through the base of the- 10 needle and t e gauge, and a nut provided on the screw for clamping the needle and gauge in position. in the handle, substantially as specified; i
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in presence oftwo subscribing witnesses. v I i FRANCIS HrWJEBSTgER. Witnesses: c I
