CLOTHESPIN.
APPLICATION FILED mmza. 1921.

W Iii enter. 14 Ear? WZ'S A By M 15 (Illornqy,
parent during the course of EARL WEST, OF OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA.
onornnsrm) Application filed March 28, 1921.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, EARL \Vnsr, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Oakland, in the county of r-llameda and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Clothespins, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for retaining articles, such as clothes, on a clothes line, and has for its object the provision of means whereby positive wedging action of said means will accomplish the desired result. i
A further object of this invention is to provide a device of the character described, which has means associated with the parts comprising the same for preventing said parts from being accidentally displaced from each other.
Another object of this invention is to provide a device or this character which is simple in construction, inexpensive to n1anufact-tire, strong, durable and reliable in operation.
Other objects and advantages will be apthe following description.
, parts throughout the In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and n whi h like numerals are employed to designatelike same, Figure l is a perspective view of the device shown applied to a clothes line,
Figure 2 is a similar view showing the device detached from the line.
Figure 3 is cross-section of the device, and Figure 4 is an enlarged sectional detail of the invention, showing an end cap positioned therein.
In the drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodi mentof my invention the numeral 5 designates a tubular body of preferably m t wood which has provided therein a lor itudinal bore 6 and recesses i. 5 is likewise equipped with an extension 0 which has formed therein a transverse groove 9' and thereon a beveled upper surface 10, adapted to be received in the groove 9, is a clothes line 11, on which is placed an article 12, to be suspended. In actual practise the article restson the line and part of the same is then draped'over the beveled surface, after which a tion it is held in a fixed position through the wedging contact of a pin 13, also preferably made of wood.
As shown to advantagein Figures 2 and Specification ofLetters Patent.
This body Patented Feb. 211, 1922.
Serial No. 456,054.
3 this pin is preferably cylindrical in form and tapered from a part extending half its length to its extremity 14, in order to assure the wedging effect when the pin is moved inwardly, from the bore 6, of the body 5.
For the purpose of retaining the pin 13, in the body 5, to prevent its accidental displacement theretrom, l have provided a slot let, adapted to extend from the rear extreinity of the pin to the point 15, which is over three-fourths the length thereof, and have suitably mounted in the tubular body vertical disposed crosspin 16, this cross pin extends from the slot 14:, and has its respective ends mounted in recesses 7 formed in the body 5,
From the consideration of Figure 3 of the drawing it will be apparent that inward movement of the pin 13, in the body 5, will "c limited by the contact of the cross-pin 16, with the body portionoi" the tapered pin 13,, at the point 15, and thus prevent the above mentioned accidental displacement.
In order to render the tapered slotted pin 13 com act throu hout its lens th and also strong at its rear extremity l propose to suitably mount a gear 17, on the rear end of the pin.
It to'be understood that the form of my invention, herewith shown and described, is to be taken as a preferred e:-:- ample or the same, and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts, may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit of the invention, or the scope of the snbjoined claim.
Having thus described my invention, 1 clai1n:
A clothes pin comprising a tubular body terminating in an extension having a beveled upper surface, a tapered slotted pin slidably mounted in s 'd body for longitudinal movement therein, said pin being ture.
