r0 EDWARD G. scnnnnnr'aan Ann JOHN, M. i omfnnn FOLDING ToY BED. l 'i Specification of Letters Patent Feb,
' r i v r Application filed April 11, 1921. Serial No. 460,226. a A
I To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VIILLIAM H. Sronnr, a, citizen of the "United States of America, residing at.-Ensley,-in the county of Jefferson, and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and; useful improvements in F g Toy Beds, of Which the followingv is a specification.
My invention relates to a toy bedadapted to fold and which is characterized by the distinctive manner inwhich the side members are hinged to the posts'of the headand foot, and by the manner in which the mat-- tress supporting frame will effectively brace and clamp the bed in its operative posi- L blOn.
it is particularly my object to avoid any parts which will work loose or which will rattle or provide a flimsy or insecure'bed, and to this endthe side members are permanently hinged to the posts of the heador foot so as to turn about the latter as axes, thus permitting the head and foot to be col- ,lapsed by a lateral lazy tong movement and therefore requiring no displacement or removal of any part of the bed frame proper and especially requiring no tools for assembling or collapsing the bed.
A further dist nctive feature of my 1nrcntion is the provision of the mattress support in the form of a rectangular frame I which by engagement with the bed sides will securely clamp and hold them in rectangular relation to the head and foot and thus provide a firm, secure and antirattling bed brave.
A further object of my invention is to construct the bed. from both wireand metal strips, the latter forming the sides of the bed and the bracing mattress support which has spring loops that tightly clamp the side bars. 7
My invention will be better understood by the eziemplification thereof shown in the accompanying drawings, in which F 1 shows the bed in assembled position in perspective view. 7 I
is a plan view on a smaller scale of the bed in collapsed or folded position, the mattress support having been removed.
3 is a detail cross sectional view through one 'of the sides to illustrate the character of the clamp attachment of the mattress supporting and bracing frame thereto.
Fig.4 is a sectional view taken onthe line l4;of Fig; 3.
Similar reference numerals refer 'tOSlIIl- 5 ilar: parts throughout 'thefldrawings.
In -the embodiment --illustrated,i I .show' 4 and 5, the crosfslw'iresBand 4 beingco'ne the head and foot of, theibedzmadeof wire 1 and each comprising' -uprightlside posts .1 and 2, which are cross connected overhead by a wire-3 andvbelowi by thesp'aced wires nectjed atintervals -by.;vertical wires 6. All;
wires at their point of junctiona re. 'suitably if and positively engaged s'o-{as to, form a, rigid rectangular head or foot frame for the bed, but it is to be understood that my invention is not confined to any design of head or foot members forjthebed'nor t0 the character of'material from whichthey are formed. The corresponding side posts 1 and 2 of the head and foot are'respectively conneeted by metal side bars 7, the ends vof. which are bent about posts to form the hinge eyes or loops 8'. 'The side barsare of such a width as to fit'elosely between the;
cross wires 4 and 5 which thus form bearings to prevent vertical displacement of the 'bar loops 8 on theirvrespective posts.
With the bed frame proper thus manufactured and assembled, it wi'll'be evident that each side bar will hinge about the posts 1 or 2, to which itis respectively connected,
and will thus permit the bed frame proper] the ends of the bars 9 and thecross bar 11 at the center of the bars 9. The-bars '9 pref-' erably overlie these cross bars which at each end are provided with-a bracing and clamping loop formed by bending theend of the bar ,upright to form the brace and inner clamp member 12 and then over-and down to form the outer clamp memberil3. This brace and clamp is provided at each end of each cross bar and as all cross bars are of the,
same length I thus provide a light rectangular bracing and clamping frame which is adapted to be applied by forcing its downwardly opening clamp jaws 12, 13 over the side bars 7 of the bed and when this is done the inner brace walls 12 of the clamps will effectively brace the bed in its true rectangular position while the clamp members 12 and 13 of the clamp jaws will so tightly engage the side bars as to hold them and the mattress supporting frame in non-rattling assembled position The result is that the bed when set up is rigid, strong and has no tendency to rattle. The bed being free of loose parts or any partsrequiring the use a of a tool to put it up or take it down, represents great simplicity in construction, can be economically manufactured, and Wlll prove very strong and durable in service.
Having thus described my invention, but
bers, each embodying upright side posts, a top cross connecting bar, and lower cross connecting bars slightly spaced, with the ends of all cross bars immovably connected to the side posts, flat sheet metal side bars extending between the side posts at opposite sides of thebed and having their ends bent into loop formations for rotatable mounting upon the side posts between adjacent ends of the lower cross connecting bars with the bars preventing perpendicular movements of the side bars relative to the side posts, and a mattress supporting frame embodying end cross strips of flat sheet metal having their transverse axes extending longitudinally of the bed with the ends of the cross strips bent to inverted U-shape formation for mounting upon the sheet metal side bars to hold the bed frame in rectangular formation.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
