T. HYATT. Ridge "and Furrow Sidewalk Plates.
NO.140,708. V 4 Patentedluly8,1873.
/////////////////fl/ JQ z) J 12 v I D WTNES SEE: INVENTD E...
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THADDEUS HYATT, OF ATCHISON, KANSAS.
IMPROVEMENT IN RIDGE-AND-FURROW SIDEWALK-PLATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,*708, dated July 8, 1873; application filed December 23, 1870.
To all whom it may concem:
Be it known that I, THADDEUS HYATT, of the city, county and State of New York, formerly of Atchison, Kansas, have invented certain new and 4 useful Improvements in Ridge-and-Furrow sidewalk-Plates; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exactidescription thereof, reference being had to the acconpanyin g drawing making a part of this specification, in which-r Figure l is a perspective view of a section of a plate containing my improvements. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same upon line w a; of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a longitudinalsection upon a line extending through the center of one of the ridges.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
The design of my invention is to furnish a substitute for ordinary open iron gratings used in sidewalks as covers for areas, coalholes, &c.,which substitute shall possess suitable ventilating and light transmitting openings, and at the same time shall afi'ord complete protection against the downward passage of Water, to which end said invention consists, principally, in a ventilating, corrugated pavenent-plate,in which the corrugations are formed transversely of or from a series of straight lines, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified. It consists, further, in a ventilating corrugated pavement-plate, in which the ventilating-openings have their upper and lower sides for'med upon lines which have an outward and downward inclination, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter shown. i
In the annexed drawing, A represents a metal plate corrugated in one direction so as -to produce a series of ridges, B, and intervening depressions or grooves, O,which are formed upon, or of, a series of straight lines,
as shown. The upper surface of each ridge B is preferably grooved so as to produce a better bearin g for the feet, while the' sides of said ridges and the bottom of each groove are made smooth so as to cause water falling thereon to readily pass off. In and through the side walls b of each ridge B is provided a number of openings, D, the sides of which are vertical and have a right angle to the horizontal plane of said walls, while their lower edges d incline upward and inward at a sharp angle, as shown. The upper edge of each opening is protected by means of a downward-projecting lip, d', which forms a part of the wall of the ridge.
As thus constructed the plate afi'ords to the space beneath a perfect protection from rain, as, before any water can pass inward through the openings, it must rise to a higher point than the upper inner portion of the inclined bottom edge of the same; while, for
ventilating purposes, said openings aiford free, unobstructed passage for air.
Having thus fully setforth the nature and meritsof my invention, what I claim is- 1. A ventilatin g corrugated pavement-plate, in which the corrugations in transverse section show a series of straight lines, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. Aventilating corrugated pavement-plate, A, in which the openings D, constructed in and through the walls b, have their upper and lower sides formed upon lines having an outward and downward inclination, substantially as and for the purpose shown.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 18th day of November, 1870.
THADDEUS HYATT. Witnesses:
J os. F. FLATHERS, A. W. LAKE.
