the provision of a lock for trunks, cabinets,
boxes and the like whereby the lid or Cover member is securely held in closed position releasable only by means of a peculiar key in the hands of a person familiar with the manner of operating' the lock, the latter being extremely dithcult to manipulate by one unfamiliar with its peculiar construct-ion.
A further object ot the invention is the provision of a lock having double securing means, one. adapted for release by imparting' movements to secret portions ojt the exterior ot the lock structure and the other releasable by means ot certain manipulations of a particular key in connection with a secret releasing means.

Thehasp 12 is positioned v\\ithiu a U-shaped guard 33 upon the plate 17 when the hasp is closed, the latter having an upturned lower end 3-il adapted for fitting within the lower closed end of the guard 33.
The catch 31 is adapted to be manually released by sliding the head or button 27 upwardly, the button 52.7 having a shank 35 slidable through a. slot 36 in the plate 17 and carried by an angular lever 37 pivoted as at 3S to the inner :tace of the plate 17. A spring 39 encircles the post19 and is anchored at one end to a stud 4:0 carried by the plate 17 and at its-other end to the lever 37 as at L11 for normally holding the button 27 de`- pressed and the lower end portion Ll2 of the lever 37 elevated. A latch t7 in the form of a hook is pivoted as at L13 to the plate 17 normally held` overlying the lever 37 by means of a spring 49 engaging the lower ond of the latch 47 and whereby the lever 37 is maintained against movement untilthe latch 47 is released. Suitable initials such as Jj and B designated 50 and`51' respectively are secured upon the outer face of the plate 17 at opposite sides of the button 27. A short arin 52 is pivoted to the latch 47having a suitable piece 53 of the plate 17 carried by the arm 52 beneath any suitable portion of the initial 51 such as the upper arcuateV portion 54- thereof. j
The operation of the locking mechanism for the hasp 12 will be fully understood from this detailed description thereof, the closing of the hasp 12 within the guard 33 depressing the normally bent` spring 32 and lengaging the catch 31 beneath the plate 17 with the housing 29 projected inwardly through the opening 30. The end 46 of the releasing rocher 43 is normally positioned adjacent the catch 31 and upon placing any device such as a pencil through the portion 5st of the initial 51, the plate portion 53 may be depressed against the spring 49, thereby releasing the latch t7 from the lever 37. lVhen the lever 37 is released in this manner, the button 27 may be manually shifted upwardlyv thereby depressing the link and upwardly moving the rocker 43 to .ele-
vate the catch 31 to its released position and whereupon the spring 32 causes the hasp 12 to ily open. Upon releasing the button 27, the spring 39 returns the lever 37, link l5 and rocker 43, to their normal positions while the spring 119 returns the latch a7 to its engaging position overlying the lever 37.
rlhe hasp 13 is similar in construction to the hasp 12 having a kUshaped guard incassa yfalseY head or button 28 has its shank 60 slidable through a slot 61 in the plate 17 and carried by a link 62 pivoted at Vits upper end to thelever 53 in such a manner as to pivotally Amove the lever 58 out of engagement with the notch 37 when the button 28 is forcibly lowered. The spring 63 surrounds the post 21 forminga pivot for the lever 58 with one end of thespringrsecured as at 64 to the lever' 58 and its other end anchored to a stud 65 on the inner facel of the plate 17.
' The spring 63 normally returns the lever 58 to the upward limit rof its travel with its portion 59 inwardly of the plate opening 56, whereby the closing of the hasp 13 and the cntryofthe loop 55 through the opening 56 into the notch 37 is made for retaining the hasp 13 closed until the button 28 is again moved downwardly.
The description of thieinvention so' far pointed outdeals with boltlcss mechanism `for holding the hasps 12 and 13 against .opening untllsomc secret portions of the visible lock construction have been manually operated. These are safety features by reason of the fact that a person not familiar withthe construction and operation of the device would iind great difliculty in releasing the hasps 12 and 13 in the `manner described, and for certain purposes such mechanism is su'tiicient for holding the lid 11 in closed position upon the trunk 10 for ready release by the owner whenever desired, withq out the employment of any key or specially designed implement. f j
`When it is` desiredyto more securely lock the hasp 13, a key 66 is provided for longitudinally moving a bolt 67 slidably mounted inwardly of the yplate 17 a Suitable key hole 68 being provided through the plate 17 for admitting the key V66. The bolt 67 is yslid` ably mounted between `the plates 17 and 13 through a `loop 69 and spaced companion lugs 70 and 70 carried by the plate 17, theI opening of the loop 69 being in alignment-A with the opening 71 in the loop 55 whereby the bolt passes through the loop 71 when projected by means of the key 63 and is retracted outv of the loop 71 in its released position when withdrawn as illustrated in Fig. 2. A key-hole guard is provided in the form of an ornamental elongated plate 72 having a pin 7 3 at its upper end journaled through the plate 17 with a coil spring 74 adapted to normally throw the guard plate 72 pivotally away from the key hole G8 as illustrated by dotted lines in Fig. 1. When the plate 72 is forced against vthe spring 74 to its upright position overlying the key hole 6 8, a. pin 7 5 slidable through the plate 17 and'carried bya spring TGsecured at yone end 7 7 to the inner side of the plate 17 engages within a socket 7 8 on the inner side of the plate 72, substantiallyT centrally of the lower end thereof tor retaining the plate72 in its covering position. The spring 7 G has an outwardly projectinglug 79 at the oppo site end thereof from the end 77 oi the spring 76 and this lug 79 projects through an opening 80 in the plate 17 for ready engagement by the beveled end S1 ol the angular ward 82 oiik the keyGG and whereby the lug 7 9 is depressed and releasing the pin 75 from the cover plate 72 and permitting the spring 74: to swing the plate 72 with the key hole G8 uncovered as heretofore set itorth. An arcuate guard 83 overlies the lower end ot the pivoted plate 7.2 as well as the lug 79, whereby the lug 7 9 is normally obscured from view although in a position to permit the angular ward S2 to 'be positioned with itsoblique end portion S1 beneath the guard 83 for depressingy the lug 79 and releasing the pin 75, causingthe automatic opening ot the key hole guard plate 72. lVith the bolt G7 retracted as shoi'vn'in Fig. 2,. the key G6 is positioned through the key hole G8 and theward 82 engaged against the `forward side 811 of the notch 85 in said bolt 07 for projecting the bolt through the loop on turning the key 66 one'revolution.v A lurther.revolution oi the key 06 engages the Vward S2 against the forward side 8Gl el? a relis anchored atene end at 89 to the bolt 07 and is broughtupon -li'ully projecting the bolt with its subst-antiall)Y central thickened portion 90 in such relation lto the hole 08 as to engage the key ward S2 withthe portion 90 upon a short revolution ot' the key 66 and whereby 'the spring lever 88 is forced upwardly permitting a beveled lug 9.1v to engage within a socket 92 vin the thickened portion 90 and thereby hold the releasing lever 88 out ol" the path of movement of the key ward 82 for preventing the key r'from returning the bolt 6710 its unlocked posh tion. i
Then it is desired to retract the bolt G7 it is necessary to inwardly move the lug 91 and this lug being carried by a spring 93 which is pivoted to the plate 18 at 94e may be so moved away from the plate 17 by forcibly depressing inwardly the key post95 which is carried by the said spring 93 and 'freely moves through an opening 96 in the plate 18. The releasing operation is therefore y accomplished by lirst depressing the key -post 95 with any convenient member such as the key 66 and then inserting the key with its axial bore 97 upon the post 95 and turning the saine to engage the ward 82 withthe forward side 98 of the portion 90 of the spring leverSS whereby the bolt G7 is retracted one step and a further turning of the key 66 brings the ward S2 into engagement with the rear tace 99 ot the notch S5 giving the linal retraction to the bolt 07 and placing the samein its unlocked position.
A. detent 100 is pivoted at 101 to the plate 17 with an elongated lower portion 102 normally positioned in linewith the open sides ot the slots Soand S7 and with an intermediate shoulder 103 of the detent 100 positioned within a top notch 104 of the bolt 6T when the bolt is retracted. Upon every turn ofv the rey 67 its wardV 82 engages the por'- tion 102 of the detent 100 and raises the shoulder v103 above the upper edge of the bolt 67 'for automatically releasing the bolt from the shoulder 103 whenever the key 66 is turned for actuating the bolt in either direction. The shoulder 103 seatswithin an intermediate notch 105 in the top oil the bolt 67 when the bolt is projected one step and into the rear notch 106 in the top oi' the bolt G7 when kthe bolt is entirely projected in its locked position. After the bolt is fully projected and the releasing spring lever SSis caught by the lug 91 so as to be out of the path of movement of the key ward S2 which prevents the retraction of the bolt G7, the detent portion 102 is still within the path of movement oi the ward 82 giving the impression to anunautl'iorized person endeavoring to pick the lock that the bolt actuating mechanism is'being operated.
The complete operation oit the lock niechanisin will be fully understood from this detailed descriptionthereof7 the bolt 67 being releasable upon depressing the key vpost 95 to cause the 'releasing lever 88 to spring downwardly into position and whereupon two revolutions oil' the key 60 fully retract the bolt. kThe bolt is then fully projected by two reverse turns of the key 66 and the releasing lever 88 is elevated for holding by the lug 91 upon a short turn given to the key 66. l
When the bolt 67 is locked7 the ikey hole guard'72 is returned to its norma-l vertical position, automatically engaging the pin 7 with the lower socket et said guard .7 2 whereby the completely secured lock presents the appearance shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. f
A return spring 107 has its i'ree end mounted upon the retaining member 100 for returning the shoulder 103 to its adjacent notch ot the bolt 67, the spring 107 being coiled about andr anchored to a post 108 bene-ath the plate 17. n
Vh-ile the torni of the invention herein sol shown and described is what is believed -to be the preferred embodiment thereof, it is nevertheless to be understood that various terms, modifications and arrangements of the part-s may be made without departing from the spirit and scope oit the invention as claimed.

operating key for the bolt, a spring-releasing lever ior the bolt mounted on the bolt within the path of movement of thel key when turning'in the bolt-projecting direction after the bolt is locked and engaging means for the lever when in its inoperative position.
