LATHE-BED CONSTRUCTION.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT Wniss, a citizen of the Republic of Switzerland, residing at Bassersdorf, Ct. Zurich, Switzerland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lathe-Bed Construction, (for which applications have been filed in Switzerland February 13, 1914; in Germany May 23, 1914; in France December 29, 1914:; in Italy March 31, 1915; in Austria December 15, 1917 in Great Britain February 25, 1915; in Belgium February 22, 1915, and in Russia March 13, 1915;) and I do hereby declare the following to he a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
I11 the working of a slide-rest lathe of the ordinary type, or a capstan or turret lathe, the accuracy of the operation, the life of the mechanism, and the quality of the output depend primarily on the accuracy with which the slide is guided, and the permanency of the guides.
My invention provides an improved arrangement of the guides and the mechanism actuating the slides, whereby an exceptional length of the bearingsurfaces is obtained, and the invention consists in a combination wherein the rack is fixed to the bed above the main guide of the slide rest, covering the same, and the lead screw is arranged directly below the said main guide, and is thus protected by the same.
This arrangement affords the advantage of grett rigidity when the work requires the application of considerable power, involving strain on the bed, and if the latter bed has a gap, as is frequently the case for various classes of work, the placing of the screw below the main guide makes it possible to run the slide over the gap, if necessary, without effecting any change in the actuating gear, or providing an indirect drive therefor.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, showing one form of construction.

In the drawings 1 designates the bed, having at the top guides 2 and 3 for the sliding carriage. The guides 41- and 5 for the slide 6 (I being the main guide) are at the sides of the bed, lower down. To prevent bending of the saddle of the slide 6, the same has an additional guide surface resting on the guide 2. To prevent the rising and lat eral deviation of the slide under stress during the working the same is provided with flanges 8, 9 which engage under the part 5 and 11 of the bed, and can be tightened up by means of screws, to compensate for wear and regulate the pressure of the slide on the bed. In order to give the slide long bearing surfaces, it is provided with extensions 10 fore and aft of the gear box 7, engaging over the angular or prismatic main guide 1.
The rack 12 is screwed to the bed above the guide 4, at one side of the bed and ex posed at the top, but the rack is made wide so that it protects the guide from shavings.
For this purpose the rack may be made in two parts.
The lead screw 13 and the control shaft 14 are below the bed, protected by the laterally projecting guide member 11 already referred to. The pinion 15 is mounted on the slide between the guide 1 and the channel provided for the rack.
In order to also protect the guide at at the gap of the bed, a guard 16 is provided at this part, and conforms to the shape of the slide, so that the slide can be moved uninterruptedly to the head stock. In Figures 1 and 1, 17 designates the contact surface between the body of the slide and the bottom of the gear box, these parts having at the sides lugs 18, which are screwed to each other. The position of the joint at this part obviates torque in the cutting screws, as the joint is close to the nut 19 and there is practically no leverage.
, The projections 11 of the bed, with the rear guides, a rack arranged over and pro tecting the front guide, a feed-screw below said guide, a slide on said guides, flanges on said slide engaging beneath the guides, and lateral extensions on said slide engaging the front guide.
3. In a lathe bed construction, front and rear guides, a rack having a gap secured above and protecting one of the guides from chipsand a guard for said gap.
