Be it known that I, CHARLES E. WARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Windows, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in windows and has for its object to provide'a simple, cheap and efficient means whereby the sash may be raised and lowered in the frame and held in the desired position without the use of the sash weights; and further to provide means for Securing the sash in the frame and for removing the latter when desired.
The invention consists of the novel construction and arrangement of the parts herev inafter set forth in the following specification and pointed out in detail in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing,
Figure 1 is a perspective view part of a window frame showing my invention applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section through the window frame and one of the window sashes, and looking down upon the other sash.
Figure 3 is a detail section of the upper portion of one of the sashes showing the adjustable means for holding the sash in the desired position.
Figure 4 is a detail perspective view of the upper end of the window sash showing one of the removable guides.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, and in which like reference numerals designate like parts throughout the several views thereof, 1 designates a window frame which is provided with strips of rubber or other suitable material 2 against which the window sashes operate. Said strips 2 extend entirely around the window frame and are slightly spaced apart for the purpose hereinafter described. The sashes 38 fit into the window frame 1 and are held therein by the metal guides 4 which latter fit in the grooves 5 in the sashes 3 and project beyond the rubber strips 2. Said guides 4 slide up and down with the sashes 3 and when it IS deslred to remove one or both of the said sashes the strip 4' is withdrawn from one side of the sash by placing a suitable tool under the extension 6 and drawing the said guide 4 out of the slot 5 on one side whereby the said sash can then be easily removed from the frame 1. The sashes 3 are provided on each slde near their upper and lower ends with an adjustable ball-bearing 7 the said ball-bearing fits in the slot 8 and projects through an opening in the plate 9 and rests agalnst the strips 2. Back of said ball-bearing 7 are two metal disks 10 and 11 between which is a rubber disk 12. A screw 13 projects through the metal plate 14 and has its inner end resting against the disk 11. The tension on the ball-bearing 7 is increased or decreased by adjusting the screw 13 the resiliency being afforded by the rubber disk 12.
It will thus be seen that by the use of my invention the friction between the window sashes and the frame can be increased or decreased to suit the weight of the sash being used. 7
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
1. The combination with a window sash of ball-bearings mounted in the side of said sash, two metal disks adjacent each of said ball-bearings, a flexible disk between the metal disks and screws projecting through the sash and impinging against one of said metal disks to regulate the tension of the ball-bearing.
2. The combination of a window frame, two flexible strips extending entirely around said frame adjacent to and in alignment each with one of the window sashes, two sashes slidable in said frame, a removable guide on each of the stiles of each of said window sashes and engaging one of said strips, ball bearings mounted in opposite sides of said sashes and in engagement with said flexible strips, and means for regulating the tension on said ball-bearings.
