INSTRUMENT FOR PRODUCING LINES.
mosses.
Application filed March 21, 1921.
To (1 whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Alumni EMMANUEL MARIE VAN DER Mnnnsol-i, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at 1 Clyde Street, Redcliffe Gardens, Kensington, Lon don,' England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Instruments for Producing Lines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in and connected with instruments "for producing lines and it has for its object to provide an improved instrument for the drawing of lines, which will not possess the disadvantages inherent with such instruments as} drawing pens.
According to my invention I depart from the process of using two steel blades in a drawing pen, as a retainer for the ink or paint, and use for this purpose a paint brush which is fitted to a combination handle and adjustable support in such a way that the brush gives a line of constant thickness.
In order that my invention may be properly understood and readily carried into effect, I have hereunto appended one sheet of drawings which illustrates in elevation, partly in section, the preferred form of: instrument constructed in accordance with my invention.
Referring to the drawinga is a hollow tube which holds a brush 1 at the split end f.
Z) is asliding guide provided with a pivot (Z for a support or leg 0. c is a brush support or leg which consists of a fiat piece of metal finished into two planes at right angles to one another; it is pivoted at the point (Z to the guide 7) and carries an adjusting screw 6. A short spring at 72 tends to push the upper end of the guide 0 away from the tube (Z.
In the preferred construction the sliding guide forms a. trough at its open end, into which the support 0 fits and is kept from lateral movements.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 14, 1922.
Serial No. 454,161.
The guide itself has a circular shape at its closed end so as to fit over the tube a and to be capable of sliding up and down this latter.
The support 0 is shaped to a smooth point at the end next to the brush so as to allow the line to be ruled as near the ruler as possible. Its other extremity projects outside the sliding guide so that on pressing it, the pointed end may be pivoted away from the brush which makes it easier to remove this latter.
In the use of the instrument the brush is filled with ink or the like and the screw 6 is adjusted according to the thickness of line required, the end of the guide 0 and the point of the brush close for fine lines. The instrument is held at fixed inclination to the paper and the end of the guide 0 is moved along a ruler or the like with the brush in contact with the paper.
By sliding the guide Z) the overlap of the brush over the support may be regulated and a variation obtained in the thickness of the line.
The adjusting screw 6 alters the distance between the guide 0 and the brush and allows the latter to spread for a thick line.
What I claim is The combination with a hollow handle having av brush terminal designed to mark a line of constant thickness, of a guide slidably fitting said handle, an elongated fiat support having one end adjacent the brush,
said support being twisted on itself to present an upper portion at right angles to the lower portion, said upper portion being pivoted to the guide, a spring arranged between the upper portion of the support and guide and means operating through the lower portion'of the support and cooperating with the hollow handle to space the lower end of the support relative to the brush.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature.
