UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SHUBAEL GOTTLE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR MANUFACTURING JEWELRY-BASES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,616, dated July 8, 1873; application filed March 22, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SHUBAEL GorrLE, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Means for Making certain forms of J ewelry- Bases for Studs, Buttons, Settings, Bracelets, Scarf-Rings, 850., of which the following is a specification The invention consists in a peculiarly-constructed former combined with a die-burnisher and mandrel, as hereinafter described;
Figure 1 is a plan and section of the blank to be operated upon. Fig. 2 is a plan and section of the former, shown in the blank A. Fig. 3 is aface view and section of the female die. Fig. 4 is a face view and section of the plunger. Fig. 5 is a plan view and section of the blank and former as they come from the die. Fig. 6 isa face view and section of the mandrel. Fig. 7 is a side and edge view of the burnisher. Fig. 8 is a plan and section of the blank as it comes from the mandrel and burnisher. Fig. 9 is a plan view and section of the completed blank.
A represents a blank, having the bottom a and barrel to at a sharp angle, a to each other. 13 is a former, made in sections, preferably in five pieces, b b b b b. C is a female die, made with a detachable bottom, 0, for convenience in removing the blank, and with a shoulder, 0 in its cavity, leaving a space, 0 around the barrel a of the blank A when said blank is inserted in said die 0. D is a plunger, which is made with a square edge, d and a recess, (1 having a rounded angle, (1
The former B is placed in the blank A, and
the blank is inserted within the shoulder C of the die (3. The plunger D is then brought down upon the edge a of the barrel a of the blank A, turning the said edge a inward over the former B, producing the blank A.
E is a mandrel, which is made hollow, and with a cavity, 0, in which. the blank A is placed.
The blank A is nowplaced in the mandrel E, and while the mandrel is being rotated in a lathe, a burnisher, F, is held against the turned-over edge a which is thus pressed down upon the former B until it has a sharp angle. This produces the blank A The blank is now taken out of the mandrel, and the middle section b of the former is removed, and subsequently the others, after which the bottom a is cut out so as to produce the blank A which consists of three curved strips, two being horizontal, and the other, which connects them, vertical.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The former B, consisting of a middle section, b, and several surrounding sections 1), in combination with a die 0 D, burnisher F, and mandrel E, as and for the purpose described.
Witnesses: SHUBAEL OOTTLE.
