To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES ABRELL, a citizen of the United States, residin at Bedding, in the county of Shasta and tate of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tableware; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. I

This invention relates to improved articles of tableware such as spoons, forks, and the like, and it has for its object to provide articles of this class with novel means for supporting them from the edge of a dish, bowl, or the like, and thus prevent them. from slipping into the bowl or dish, which oftentimes occurs.

Another object of the invention is to generally improve upon articles of this class by the provision of one which is composed'of a single metal stamping including a head, shank, and handle, the material at a juncture of the shank and handle being widened to provide a tongue which is then bent to form a hook adapted to take over the edge of a dish or the like.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.

In the accompanying drawings forming a form of a spoon, I WlSh it to be understood that it could also equally well be a fork or part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same:

Figure 1 is a top plan view of a spoon constructed in accordance with my invention.

Figure 2 is a similar view with a portion omitted, the tongue being bent to form a hook.

Figure 3 is an edge elevation thereof.

Referring to the drawings wherein the preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated, it will be seen that the numeral 1 designates the bowl of a spoon from which a relatively narrow shank 2 extends, this shank being gradually en-' larged' at its outer end to provide the usual finger pieceor handle 3. According to this invention the last named parts 2 and 3 will be widened along one longitudinal edge, preferably at the juncture of the shank and handle. Then, this widened portion is slit on a curved line as indicated at4 to simultaneously provide the usual artistic curved shoulder 5 at this point and a tongue 6. The latter has its edges curved to give it an artistic appearance and it is bent upon itself to provide a hook which is adapted to take over the upper edge of a dish or anyother culinary article. 7

From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have devised an extremely effective and advantageous article which can be suspended from the upper edge of a dish or the like, and thus prevented from slipping into the dish as oftentimes occurs, necessi tating the removal thereof. The construction and arrangement which I employ is very simple and thus the device will be found very inexpensive to both the manufacturer and the user. The suspension hook is formed at a very convenient point and it is such that when it is slitted to provide the aforesaid tongue, it at the same time provides the usual curved shoulder at the juncture of the tongue and handle. The supporting hook does not in any Way detract from the artistic appearance of the spoon. With my construction there are no grooves in which dirt may accumulate and render the spoon unsanitary. These and other advantages and features of my construction, have, no doubt, become apparent from the foregoing description.

A careful consideration of these descriptions taken in connection with the accompanying drawings is thought to be suflicient to enablepersons skilled in the art to which the inventlon relates to obtain a clear understanding of the same, therefore, a more len thy description is deemed unnecessary.

However, slight changes in the shape, and size may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.

A spoon or like handle comprisinga relatively narrow shank having a widened upper end portion forming a finger piece, one edge of said finger piece curving inwardly fin 'er piece forming a hook on the shank an leaving a second curved shoulder opposite to and uniform with the aforesaid 1O shoulder.
