rnnv'rnn's SLUG Am) RULE.
' Specification of Letters Patent. lPatente d Feb. 7, 19 22.
application filed March 16, 1921. Serial No. 452,891.
T all whom it may concern.
I Bev it known that I, WILLIAM FIT-Arron, a citizen .oftheUnited States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of'Manhattan, inthe county of .New Yorkancl State of New York, have invented new and Improved Printers Slugs and Rules, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. I I
This invention relates to slugs and rules and molds therefor to produce slugs and rules in strip form.
It has been the common practice heretofore to produce slugs and rules with the central opening therethrough for the purpose of effecting a rapid cooling of the strip casting. This method of producing the strip castings consists in heating the raw material in, a suitable melting pot to a temperature slightly above the free melting point of such metal. In this molten state,
the metal passes into the mold under pressure applied by a plunger to pack the molten metal solidly within the mold and insure an exact full size and solid formation having hard, sharp faces and surfaces. A mandrel is arranged in the mold to form the central opening in the strip casting and a suitable cooling chamber embraces the outlet end of the mold for the purpose of cooling and hardening the material. 7
In practice the single opening through the slug or rule provides comparatively thin side walls which have a tendency to bend and fracture when clamped in the chase.
In order to overcome this objection and strengthen the side walls, it is an object of this invention to provide the opening with a transverse rib arranged centrally thereof. A further object in view resides in the slug and rule strip casting, the provision of a suitable mold for manufacturing the same which does not materially add to the expense or time and labor incident thereto= With the above recited and other ends in view, the invention resides in the novel construction of the slug or rule and the mold with its combination and assembly of parts set forth in the following specification, pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which;
Figure 1 is a perspective view of one form of a slug or rule constructed in accordance with the invention.
. Figure 2is'alongitudinal sectional view through a mold for casting the same. Figure 3 isa transverse sectional view through the mold taken approximately on the line 3-3of Figure 2. 1 p
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the mandrel removed'therefrom.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of another form of slug or rule constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 6 is a longitudinal sectional view through the mold employed for casting the same.
Figure 7 is a transverse sectional view therethrough taken approximately on the line 77 of Figure 6.
Figure 8 is a'perspective view of the mandrel removed therefrom.
Figure 9 is an end view of another form of a slug or rule constructed in accordance with the invention.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, the rule or slug 10 illustrated 1n Figure l of the drawings is provided with parallel longitudinal extending openings 11 and 12 providing upper and lower end walls 13 and 14, the side walls 15 and a connecting web 16. The mold illustrated in Figures 2 and 3 of the drawings is designated by the character 17 and the same comprises a rectangular member having a central reccured over the inlet end 24 of the mold and is provided with an inlet opening 25 to which the inlet conduit 26 is attached. By this arrangement the raw material in a molten state which is fed through the mold is formed with a pair of parallel longitudinally extending openings in the strip casting fed from the outlet end of the mold.
In the modification of the slug or rule 10 illustrated in Figure 5 of the drawings the openings 11 are of circular formation and are three in number thereby providin two ribs 16 for strengthening the side wa s 15 thereof. To produce this form of slug or rule, the mandrel is provided with three V tongues 23 of circular formation in cross section. I V.
In Figure 9 of thedrawings a slug or rule 10 is illustrated which is provided with a pair of parallel longitudinally extending circular openings 11 providing a single -While there has been illustrated and described several \preferred embodiments of the invention, no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details as it is to be understood that variations and modifications which properly fall within the scope of the appended claimsmay be resorted to when found expedient.
Iv claim:
As a newarticle of manufacture, a 'print- 7 ers slug or rule including a solid body portion having a plurality of'parallel openings extendingv from end to end thereof, and the material between said openings forming a longitudinally extending strengthening. web.
WILLIAM TAYLOR.
