.. invented new and useful Improvements in Safety Devices for Bathtubs, of which the -V following is a specification.
This invention is an attachment for bath tubs which provides a convenient device adapted to be grasped by a person in the bath v tub in Order to prevent slipping or falling.
I panying drawings, in which:`
The attachment affords a handle which may be swung into position to be readlly grasped or which when not in use may be readlly released and swung to one side where it will automatically yield until subsequently released..
The invention will be readily understood from the following description of the accom- Figure 1 is a plan view of a portion of a bath tub and the water faucet for the same Showing one form of the invention adapted to be mounted upon the rim of the bath tub above the water faucet. f
Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing this form of the invention. n
Fig. 3 is a detail section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. i
Fig. 4 is a detail section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a side elevation showing a modified form of the invention which includes a 'all bracket mounted above a built in bath tu yIn the form of the invention 'illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, the attachment is mounted upon the rim 1 of a bathtub 2 preferably above water faucet 3 of the bath tub.
The attachment includes a clamp 4 adapted to be received over the rim of the bath tub and held in position by means of a set screw 5.
Theclamp 4 is lvertically extended as a rod 6 having the shell 7 rotatable upon the same, and said shell is provided with a lateral nipple 8 into which is threaded a hollow pipe 9. The pipe 9 is connected at lts outer end to a bracket 10 which forms a handle 11 preferabl vertically positioned and adapted to be readily grasped by a person in the bath tub in order to assist the or leaving the bath tub.
By rotatably mounting shell 7 upon the rod person in entering Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 31, 1922. 1921. serial No. 474,483.
6, the handle may bev either swung outwardly to the position shown in Fig. 1 and into positlon to be readily grasped, or` may be swung to one side or the other, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. l, 1n order to not obstruct the use of the l water faucet 3,. Means are preferably provided for retaining handle 11 iny e1ther operative or inoperative position, and for'this purpose aplunger 12 is arran ed in pipe 9 and is provided with a coil spring 13 for normally projecting a pin '14 at the end of the plunger into engagement with one of a series'of circumferentially spaced recesses 15 provided in the rod 6. The plunger may be retracted against its Spring 13 so as to disengage the pin 14 and thereby permit swinging of the handle to one of its other positions'.
For this tends from 10, and thence through a loop 19 upon the handle 11, so that the end of said chain will be conveniently positioned; to the person using the handle. It will be understood that after the handle has been swung from one position to another and the chain 18 released, that the spring 13 will again automatically cause pin 14 to engage in one of the recesses 15 and thereby lock the handle in its new position.
In the form of the invention illustrated in Fig. 5, a device is shown which may beemployed in connection with a built in bath tub. In this form of the invention, the rod 6 projects from a wall bracket 4a which is suitably mounted upon the wall above the bath tub 2a. The handle attachment in other respects is similar to that previously described.
purpose a chain 18 preferably ex.
the plunger through the bracket It will be noted that the device as thus It will be readily understood that the foregoing description of the improved device sets forth the lessential elements of the same,
and that thespecific details of construction of the apparatusmay vary within wide' limits. In practice it will be found desirable cap screw 20 and to so arrange the plunger 21 as to limit the movement of pin 14 into engagement with recesses12. Thus for exvto retain sleeve 7 upon rod 6 by lmeans of a ample the rod of the plunger may he provided with a collar 21 adapted to abut against a flange 22 extending inwardly from pipe 9.
Various changes may be made Without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
`Whatl is claimed is:
l. A hath tulo attachment comprising a clamp adapted to engage the bath tub and having a support projecting therefroma a handle pivotally mounted on said support and adapted to be grasped by a person using the bath tub, means for latching the handle to said support and means on the handle for releasing said latching means.
2. A hath tulo attachment comprising a Laoaaaa clamp adapted to he secured to the edge of a bath tub, a post projecting upwardly from said clamp, there being a series of radially disposed recesses formed in said post, a sleeve arranged for rotation on said post, a handle secured to said sleeve, a spring actuated latch having a portion adapted to enter the recesses in the post to retain the handle in various positions of adjustment `on the post and means associated with the handle for releasing the latching means.
ln testimony whereof We have slgned our names to "this specification.
