Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARY E. LEWIS, OF MANSFIELD, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN FRUIT-PACKERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,5 ll, dated July 1, 1873; application filed April 29, 1873.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MARY E. LEWIS, of
` Mansleld, Ohio, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Fruit-Presses, ofl
which the following is a specification:
My invention has reference to presses that are used for the purpose of compressing` the contents of jars, cans, and other similar vessels, its object being to provide a convenient and expeditious means offacilitating the packing or preserving of fruit, vegetables, meats, and other things.
A is the top ofthe stand or table constructed to support the jars and to bear the pressure to which they are subjected. In its center is iixed the upright standard B, which is of sufiicient height, and made in the form of a continuous screw, turning upon which is the burr or nut C, which is of suitable form and strength, and provided with holes upon its upper sur face to receive the curved arms D D. The said arms D D are of metal, and turned downward, the lower ends being cut to form screws upon which the wormed pressers E E are operated, being adapted thereto. F is the jar whichl I prefer to use, that is constructed of any desired material, and provided with a square neck and shoulder, but a jar or can or vessel of almost any form may be manipulated successfully.
As many arms and pressers as appears dc sirable may be employed, and the pressers may be especially adapted to different forms and sizes. One convenient form in which the pressers may be made will be found to be to construct them with the lower sides in a concave form, and so cut as to have but four, or any limited number of bearings.
To operate the device, the pressers E being in position, elevate the burr or nut O and place the filled cans or jars directly under the pressers. The pressers may be then screwed down and the contents of the jars compressed and sealed at pleasure.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The table A, standard B, burr (l, arms D, and pressers E, arranged and operated substantially as shown.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing irnprovement in fruit-presses, as above described, I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 29th day of July, 1872.
