Description

1. K. LAN D IS.
Ribbon-Cases.
Patented July 1, 18731 AM. PHom-urHosRAPH/e CQ Mx (ussoR/ve FRacEss) UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH K. LANDIS, OF YORK TOVNSHIP, SANDUSKY COUNTY, OHIO. f
IMPROVEMENT IN RIBBON-CASES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,510, dated July 1, 1873; application filed February 15, 1873.
1o all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH K. LANDIs, of York, in the count-y of Sandusky and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Ribbon-Oase and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of thisV specification.
The object of my invention is to furnish an improved receptacle or holder for ribbons and other like fabrics; also, for threads, yarns, Soc., the same being adapted for use in fancy dry-goods shops; also, (when of smaller dimensions,) in families by milliners, seamstresses, and others. The invention consists of a polygonal revolving case, in each of whose compartments is a series of spools or shafts on which the ribbons are wound, the same passing through slits formed in the outer face or side of each compartment, as hereinafter described.
Figure l is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of my improved case. Fig. 3 represents one of the notched bars in which the shafts or rollers have their bearings; and Fig. 4 is a crosssection of one of the compartments of the case, showing the arrangement of the rollers.
A represents a base or pedestal, and B a standard set vertical therein to support and form the central pivot-post of the revolving polygonal case O. Said case is divided into any desired number of compartments, D, of rectangular form, and having their sides outwardly exposed, While the fourth or back side is left open inwardly or toward the standard B. The adjacent sides of each compartment or box D meet attheir inner edges, whereby a triangular open space, E, is formed between every two compartments. A series of shafts or rollers, F, is arranged in a vertical line across each compartment, the cranks thereof rest in open slots of a vertical standard or b'ar, G. Upon the shafts when so in place is to be xed a spool, having attached to it one or more hooks or catches, which shall revolve with the shaft when turned, or the hooks or catches may be attached to the shaft itself without any spool. In the front face of the compartment or longitudinal box, and opposite to the line of the above-described shaft, and parallel with it, is a slit or opening, b, of sufficient Width to readily admit a ribbon, edging, or any similar fabric, and which, being pushed in through said slit, is caught by the catch or hook on thc sha-ft or spool When the shaft is made to revolve, and thus the ribbon or other fabric is Wound around and upon the shaft or spool within the box.
The end of the ribbon is left protruding a little through the slit, and when desired may be drawn out to any required extent, and again Wound upon the shaft or spool by turning the same, as above described.
In order to admit of easy access to the several compartments for removal of the spools or shafts, or for ascertaining the amount of ribbon remaining thereon, one side, H, of each compartment is made removable by being adapted to slide at top and bottom. The same is secured by a hook, c.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A revolving ribbon-case, C, composed of a series of compartments, D, each provided with slits b, and the crank-shafts F having hooks a, substantially as shown and described.
JOSEPH K. LANDIS.
Signed in presence of- PHILIP N. SOHUYLER, HAMiLToN ScHUYLER.
