To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK X. ENDERLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles, State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Concrete Burial-Vault Construction, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to burial vaults, and more particularly to that class of vault which is preferably formed of cement and adapted to be lowered into a grave for the reception of the usual casket containing the remains, and which has a self-sealing cover adapted to be sealed thereon after the casket has been deposited therein.
The main object of this invention is to provide a receptacle for the purpose above set forth, having a groove formed in the upper edges of its walls, for the reception of a cement mixture in liquid form or other adhesive material, and a cover having a corresponding tongue member adapted. to project into said groove, the tongue member and the groove being of such shape in cross section that the cement mixture in said groove will be caused to spread in an even layer to fill the interstices between the surfaces of the tongue member and the opposed walls of the groove, as well as between the lower surface of the lid and the upper Surface of the receptacle body, thereby forming a hermetical seal between the lid and body of the receptacle after the cement mixture therebetween has become set.
A further object of this invention is to so shape the tongue member and the corresponding groove as to cause the major part, of the surplus liquid cement mixture in the groove to flow toward the outside edges of the receptacle, when the cover is being placed in position, thereby preventing said cement liquid mixture from falling into the receptacle and defacing the casket.
Other objects willappear in the following description, will be pointed out in the claim, and will be embodied in the accompanying drawings, in which j Fig. 1 is a longitudinal vertical section through a vault of the type above described, embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a transverse section through the same, taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
In constructing the vault in accordance with my improvements, I provide a receptacle 5 and a cover 6. The receptacle 5 comprises the bottom 7, the side walls 8 and the end Walls 9, all of which are preferably,
section as at 13 and is provided with bevelled ends as at 14 and is also preferably rein forced and made both moisture and air tight. The cover 6 is provided on its inner arched surface with strengthening ribs 15 which are broader and deeper at their central portion than at the extremities which join with the edges thereof.
The tongue member 12, in cross section, is formed in the shape of a quadrant, having the vertically disposed inner surface 16 and the curved lower and outer surface 17 and the groove or depression 11 is correspondingly shaped to receive said tongue, which is adapted to fit therein.
The receptacle 5 is adapted to be lowered into the grave in any convenient manner,the groove and depression 11 having been previously filled with a suitable moist grout or plastic material 18, thecasket is then lowered into the receptacle, and the cover is then lowered down on to the receptacle by means of grappling apparatus'adapted to portion of the grout being forced to the outside, due to the fact that less resistance is glven the material through the curved passage than through the vertical passage.
