H. A. McCARTY.
COLLECTOR mus. APPLICATION FILED MAYH, 1920- 1,404, 71, PatentedJan. 3-1, 1922 i M J INVENTOR n BY Pa fZ/WCCd/IY ATTbRNEY WITNESSES:
PATENT OFFICE.
BOY A. MCCARTY, OF WILKINSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC & MANUFACTURING COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
COLLECTOR RING.
Application filed May 17,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, R01" A. lx TCCARTY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of lVilkinsburg, in the county of Allegheny .and State'of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Collector Rings, of which the following is a speciii cation.
My invention relates to a dynamo-electric machine and it has particular relation to collector-rings adapted to be mounted on the rotor of such a machine.
The object of my invention is to provide a means for resiliently mounting a set of collector-rings thatshall be of simple de sign, relatively inexpensive'to manufacture and of great durability and which may be so constructed that all of the collector-rings shall be equally resilient.
Heretofore,it has been customary,.in machines embodying a plurality of collector-- rings, to mount the central'rings on a centrally disposed annular support, byineans of radially-extending supporting arms. The collector-rings on both sides of. the centrally disposed collector-rings were mounted by means of supporting arms which projected 'angularly from the planes of the collector rings to the centrally disposed support on which the central collector-rings were mounted. The central-collector-ring, being positioned more rigidly than the others by reason of the radial support, did not yield uniformly with them, so that the pressure of the brushes on the rings was unequal. This method of mounting rollector-rings is fully set forth in Letters Patent, No. 702,599, granted to R. Seigfried on Juneli, 1902.
By my invention, I provide a set of collector-rings of substantially the same flexibility, so that all of thebrushes in engag ment therewith are subjected to substantially equal pressure, thereby improving the contact made between the brushes and the rings, lessening the chattering of the brushes and causing them to wear uniformly.
Briefly speaking, my invention consists of providing resilient supporting arms for the Specification of Letters Patent.
'ing my invention. Fig. 2 1s a view, in end elevation, of the parts shown in Fig. 1. Fig.
3 is a detail cross-sectional view, taken along the line IIIHT of Fig. 2, of one oi the outer rings. Fig. 1- is a detail cross-sectional view, taken along the line TVIV of Fig. 2 of one of the supporting arms of the centrally disposed collector-ring. Fig. 5 is a detail side elevational view of that portion of the central collectonring and its supporting arm shown in Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to Figs. 1 and 2, a plurality of collector-rings 1, 2 and 3 are mounted, by means of supporting arms 4, 5 and 6, respectively, upon the centrally dlsposed supporting member 7 The annular support 7 is securely mounted upon a rotatable shaft 8 on which is also mounted a. dynamo-electric machine motor 9. Conductors 10, as best shown in Fig. 2, extend from the collector-rings 1, 2 and 3 to the windings of the rotor 9. The supporting arms 4 and 6 of the collector-rings 1 and 3, respectively, project angularlyto the centrally disposed supporting member Tand are provided, at their inner ends, with bosses 11 and 12, respectively. The centrally disposed ring 2 is provided with supporting arms 5 which curve tangentially inward from the collcc tor-ring 2. The inner end of tne arm is provided with a boss 13, similar to the bosses 11 and 12. The bosses 11, 12 and 13 are all secured, at their inner ends, to the supporting member 7 by means of bolts 14'. I
Fig. 3, which is a sectional view along the line III-III-of Fig. 2, shows a portidn of the outerring 1 provided with a laterally extending supporting arm 4- having a lag 11, at the inner end thereof, through which the stud-bolt 1 1 projects to secure it to the supporting member 7, as previously described. The lug 11 is provided with a beveled portion 15, which fits into an annular groove 16 in the supporting member 7 and is insulated therefrom by means of rings 17, composed of insulating material. The bolts 1 1 are provided with tubular coverings (not shown) and insulating washers 18 to insulate them from the bosses 11. The supporting arms 6 of the collector-ring 3 are similarly mounted and differ only from supporting arms 4 in that they project in the opposite Patented Jan. 31, 1922..
v j It will be observed by direction from the plane of the collector-ring which they support.
Figs. 4 and 5shovva portion ofthe'central collector-ring 2 provided with a tangentially extending supporting arm '5 having a lug 13 at its mner end, as previously described. 7
By making the arm 5 of the proper cross-section and length it may be made to havethe same degree ofresiliency as the arms 4 and 6; It is apparent that the supporting arms 5 are substantially in the same plane as is collector-ring 2; The bosses'13, at the inner ends of the supporting arm 5, are mounted ina manner similar to that described for the bosses 11 and, 12 orthe supporting arms 4and6. V V
those skilled in the art that collector-rings mounted in accord ance with my' invention will be uniformly resiliently mounted and thus cause their cooperating brushes to Wear uniformly and,
therefore, lfor a longer period of time and will improve thecontact madebet-ween the brushes and the collector-rings; also that and repair.
apparatus constructed in accordance therewith will be relatively simple and inexpensi've to manufacture, strong and durable in operation and relatively easy to assemble 2.
