hieh speeds in operation.
(.ommutators for dynamo electric machines, as heretofore constructed, have usually comprised a. plurality ofiars or segments and a supporting hushing having an annular V- a shaped projection at one end, or a clamping ring which was stationary relative thereto, and an adjustal le clamping rin near its other extremity. were forced together "by any convenient means, such'as a nut, scaew-threaded onto the outer er' tremity-of thelushing, or clampingv lzolts whiel'i passed through holes in the rings, were adapted to ei'igag'e complementary notches in the commutator segments.
lf this construction is used for very loin); commutators, such as il1t1:1({11l19(l for machines which are adapted to receive or to deliver relatively large values of electric current, the commutator segments show a tendency to lmlge outwardly in the middle by reason of the centrifugal forces to which they are subjected, particularly in high speed operation. This dill'icult-y has been avoided in some instancesby fastenin a ring; around the middle of the outer surface of the com-' nmtator but such a ring diminishes the surface of the commutator whichis available for engagement with brushes or current col: lee-tors and must be insulated from the com mutator' segments.
Acoordingto my present invention I fasten the commutator segments securely in position without the use of an external ring and employ a supporting bushing which is similar to those employed in the prior art.
Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings is a sectional View, in a longitudinal plane, of one-half of a commutator constructed in accordance with my invention and Fig. 2 is a similar View which discloses additional means for securely clamping in position commutator The clamping rings which Specification of Letters Patent. segments of extreme length. Fig. 3 is a plan View of the commutator liar clamping means shown in Fig. l, the commutator bars being omitted and portions of some of the bolts being hroken away. 7 4
Referring to Fig. 1, a bushing 1, which may lie rigidly attached to the shaft of, a dynamo-electric machine. is provided atone end with an anm'ilarV-shaped projection 12.
An adjustable V-shaped ring- 3 is mounted on the bushing 1 near its opposite end and, to get-her with the V-shaped projection 2, serves to firmly support the ends of a plurality of commutator segments 4. "The segments 4 are assembled in the form of a cylinder and are provided with V-shaped notches 5 and 6 which are, respectively, engaged by a V'- shaped ring 3 and the V-slniped projection 2.
In order to hold the middle of the commutator segments in position, two similar, intermediate adjustable V-shaped'rings 7 and 8 are mounted upon the bushing 1 and respectively engage notches 9 and '10 which are formed in the commutator segments. Holes 11 and 12 are rovid'ed in the intermediate rings 7 and 8 t rough which clamping bolts 13 and 14 may pass and the \f-shaped ring 3 and the projection 2 are also similar openings 15 and 16 in a ineinent with the holes in the intermediate rings. The
r'ovided with bolts 14 are.adapted to draw the intermediate ring 7 toward the stationary project-ion 2 on. the bushing and the bolts 13 are adapted to draw the intermediate ring 8 and the end ring 3 together. In this way, all the sup-fl.
porting V-shaped rings are, drawn into the notches in the commutator segments with in order to avoid interference and to'distribute the forces exerted upon the rings.
Referring to Fig, 2 the commutatorlllust-rated, is similar to thatof Fig. '1 except that the ends of the commutator segments are beveled and supporting rings ,17 and 18 are bolted, respectively, to the V-shaped ring 3 and the projection 2 of the bushing, these rings being provided with annular pr0jections 19 which are adapted'to engage the beveled ends of the commutator segments. The rings 17 and 18fserveyprincipally, to. hold the ends of the commutatorsegments complementary,
specific arrangement I desire that only such limitations be imposed as are indicated in, the appended claims."
lent 1m as my invention:
1. In a commutator, the combination with segments, and a support therefor having a non-adjustable clamping ring,'and e complementary adjustable clamping ring for said segments, of auxiliary clamping rings which engage intermediate portions of the segments.

segments, a support. and four longitudinally spaced clamping rings for said segments, of means tending to move alternate rings to wardeach other.
7. In a commutator, the combination with s'egments, a support, and four clamping rings for said segments-of bolts tending to move elteriiate rings toward each other and projectiiig loosely through holes in the interme- 8. In a commutator, the combination with segments, a supporting and clamping ring that stationary relative thereto, a complementary ai'ijustable clamping ring near the 2. In a commutator, the combination with l ing corresponding opposite end oi" the support, of a pair of complementary intermediate clam ping rings havaround the several rings and in alinement ring at or near the other end, of gauxihary ad usteble chnnping rings which engage.
segments, and a support therefor having a f non-ad ustable clamping ring at or near one 1 end, and a complementary ad ustabte clamping ring at drnear the other end, of a pair of auxiliary ad ustableland opposing clamping 'ri'n-gs wnichengage intermediate projections on the segments and lllCttllSlOD exerting opposing pressures against said auxiliary rings.
4. in a commutator, the combination with.
segments, a support, a clamping ring that is stationary rela tixe to said support and a \adjustable' clampii'ig ring for said segments, of intermediate clamping rings therefor and means for exerting pres sure upon alternate rings toward each other.
\ 5. In a'eommuta'to'r, the combination with 5 segments, a support, a clamping ring that is stationary relative to said support and a complementary, adjustable clamping ring for said segments, ot' a pair of intermediate adjustable and. opposing the 'et'or and means tending to move nate rings toward each other.
6; In acommutator, the combination with 1906. clamping rings,
alterinner end, of a V-shaped ring adjustably' monnted upon the oppos te end of the hushing, two oppositely-disposed V-shape'd' rings adjustably mounted upon the bushing intermediate its ends, and clamping bolts between each end ring and the opposing intermediate ring.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name this 28th day of Mere-h,
