Navai, Store-Room, or Coach Lamps.
N0 140,448, Patentedlu|y1,1873.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH J. WALTON, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN NAVAL STORE-ROOM OR COACH LAMPS.
' Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,448, dated July 1, 1873; application filed March 12, 1873. 1
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH J. WALTON, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Naval Store- Room and Coach Lamps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, that will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon which form a part of this specification.
This invention has for its object to provide means by which the ordinary oil store-room or coach lamp may be used with the ordinary candlestick or oil, as desired, and at the same time arrange the devices so that the candlestick may be used in the usual manner, if desired, when detached from the lamp, and the usual oil-lamp used in the lamp or lantern; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter more fully described and pointed out by the claim.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a section of a lantern with the improvement attached, and
Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the same.
A represents the body or upper portion of the ordinary store-room or coach lamp, and B.
represents the bottom of the same, the center of which has a perforation large enough to receive the tube 0. Upon the bottom of the part B is attached a flange, 0, extending around the central perforation, constructed to fit inside of the conical plate G upon the tube 0. The upper outer edge of the plate Gr forms a bead, d, having two slots, 0 c, to receive the hooks f f upon the arms or bars I I, said arms or bars being secured to the bottom B. The tube 0 is provided with the spring D, cap E,
disk at, and curved arms b b, so that the candle with the lamp or lantern in the usual manner.
I am aware that candlesticks have been used with lamps or lanterns before; but in the construction of these devices heretofore, it has been such that the lanterns or lamps are so arranged that either a candle must be used all the time, or an oil-lamp used all the time, while the object of my invention is to use the candlestick with the lantern, or use the oil-lamp with "the lantern, or either by itself, as desired.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The bottom B having central perforation, flange 0, bars I, and hooks f, with no device attached to the top of the bottom B to allow the lamp or lantern A to be used with the tube 0 and its attachments fora candle, or the"tube O and attachments to be removed from the lamp and used by itself, and the lamp or lantern to be used with the ordinary oil-lamp, as desired, as and TOLL-$2M, purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have-hereunto set my hand.
Witnesses: JOSEPH J. WALTON.
