AM PHDTO-LITHOGRAPHIC 00. MY (OSBORNEY moms) UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
HENRY \VHITE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN JOINERS WORK-BENCHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,394, dated J uly 1, 1873 application filed January 16, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, HENRY WHITE, of Chicago, in the county of Cook, in the State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Method of Constructing Joiners Work-Benches, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists in providing a threelegged standard to support each end of a bench-top, so that the parts thereof may be easily detached for the purpose of removal whenever it may be necessary to carry the bench from one room to another, or from one story to another, or from the premises, as may be required.
By this improvement workmen can, unaided, remove their bench to any part or apartment of a building where it may be required for use, and thereby obtain greater facilities for doing their work; and a bench of suitable size for use in a building for trimming or for jobhing purposes-say two feet six inches wide and from eight to ten feet in length of the top-- can easily be removed, as may be required, E'ithout danger of injuring the premises there- In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of the bench, with a portion of the top cut away to show the button which holds the parts together. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the frame, without the top plank.
The standard A I construct in the form of a right-angle triangle. The legs B B and B arefastened together by the rails C, set from four tosix inches below the top end of legs. The top D I construct with four or more transverse battens F F and side-board E, placed on edge, and to be of such width as may be required to meet and rest upon the rails C. The battens F should be set about six inches under the end of the top board, and F placed against the inner side of leg B and the parts are held together by doweling the battens F F to the legs B, B and B with the pins H and holes I, and are then secured in place by the buttons N, placed on the outside of rails C, thereby holding the parts together in a firm and practical manner.
The apertures P P indicate the method of attaching a screw-vise to the standard A.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The standards A, when constructed in the manner and for the purposes set forth.
2. The top D, in combination with the standards A, when used in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
3. The pins H. and buttons N, in combination with the standards A and top D, when constructed in the manner specified, and for the purposes set forth.
HENRY WHITE.
