Be it known that I, Gnonon J. GnIssER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Helena, in the county of Lewis and Clark and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flushing Devices for Toilets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a flushing device for toilets.
The objects of the invention are to pro vide a flushing device which will dispense with theemployment of the ordinary reservoir or tank; to provide means for supplying a predetermined amount of water to the toilet, and automatically cutting off such supply; to provide a device of the above mentioned character adapted to be directly connected with the water main, to receive water therefrom at the pressure in the main; to provide a device of the above mentioned character, which is neat in appearance, highly sanitary, and will take up very little space in use; to provide a device of the above mentioned character, which is strong, durable, and inexpensive to operate and retain in repair; to provide a device of the above mentioned character which is not liable to derangements, and in which the outlet valve is so arranged that it may be quickly and conveniently removed, for applying new packing thereto when desired.
Other objects and advantages of the in vention will be apparent during the course of the following description.

In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates a main casing, which may be formed of metal or the like. Thi main casing is supported by any suitable means, in proximity to the bowl of the toilet. One side of Specification of Letters Patent.

the casing 5 is closed by a cover 6, secured thereto by screws 7 or the like.
Preferably formed integral with the upper portion of the casing 5 is a water wheel casing 8, which is preferably circular, and projects above the same. One side of this casing 8 is open and is closed by a cover 9, secured thereto by screws 10 or the like.
The numeral 12 designates a water wheel, rigidly mounted upon a horizontal transverse drive shaft13, journaled in bearings 14 and 15. A cap 16 is preferably secured to the cover 9, and may be equipped with a small grease cup 17, to lubricate the bearing 14-. The numeral 18 designates a packing collar or the like, to prevent the leakage of water from the bearing 15. Arranged within the casing 5 is a driving gear 19, rigidly mounted upon the end of the shaft 13, and engaging a tripping gear 20, of larger diameter, which i rigidly mounted upon a horizontal driving shaft 21. This shaft 21. is rotatably held in a bearing 22. The gear 20 carries a laterally extending trip 23, as shown.
iirranged within the bottom of the casing 5 is an outlet or flushing valve casing 24, the outlet end of which is connected with a pipe 25, leading to the bowl, while its inlet end is connected with a pipe 26, extending up warcly for connection with the outlet 27 of the water wheel -asing 8. The valve casing has an annular valve seat 28, to be engaged by a packing ring 29, carried upon a valve head 30. This valve head is preferably detachably mounted upon the lower end of a valve stem 31, and is adapted to be re moved through the opening of a removable valve plug 32. The "alve head 30 seats up wardly against the valve seat 28, and the valve stem 81 is moved upwardly by a spring 33, engaging a yoke 34, carried by the valve stem, with or without the assistance of the water pressure beneath the valve head 30.
i The yoke 34: has pivotal connection at 35, with a vertically swinging lever 86, operating through a slot 37. The rear end of this lever is pivoted at 38. The lever 36 is adapted to be locked in the depressed position by means of a weighted lock element 39, having a locking face 40 and releasing face 41. The locking element 39 is pivoted to swing in a vertical plane, at 41-2, and carries a finger or extension 43, arranged in the path of travel of the trip 23. It is obvious that the pivot 42 of the locking element 39, is so located, that the rear or locking end 4:0 of the element will automatically gravitate to the lowered posit-ion, Fig. 1, when released.
The numeral 44L designates a water sup ply pipe, having a valve &5 connected therein, to regulate the supply of water to the device, at the desired pressure. The pipe 45 leads into an inlet 46 of the water wheel casing 8, preferably at its top, at a tangent.
In operation, when the lever 36 is elevated,
it engages releasing face ll of the locking element 39, thereby holding element 39 against turning movement. The valve stem 31 is now elevated and valve 30 seated. To flush the bowl, the lever 36 is depressed, and the locking element 39 will then swing downwardly upon its pivot 42, its locking face 40 now engaging the lever 36 and holding it depressed. The valve. 30 is now opened and the'water will discharge through the device and enter the pipe 25. As the water passes through the water wheel easing V 8, it rotates the water wheel 12 in the direction of its arrow, and the tripping gea 20 is accordingly rotated in an opposite direction, as indicated by its arrow. When the gear 20 has made substantially a complete revolution, the trip 23 will engage the finger 5L3, and swing the locking element 39 upwardly, the spring 33 then closing the valve 30 and swinging the lever 86 upwardly to engage the holding face 41, the locking element 39 being now held in the raised position. The trip 23 is carried past the finger 43, before the water wheel is brought to rest, and hence will not interfere with the swinging movement of the finger 43, when the lever 36 is again depressed.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described, is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus claim:
1. In a flushing device of the character described, a water supply conduit, a water wheel casing connected therein, a water wheel within said casing, a valve casing con-, nected in'said conduit. a valve head mounted within the valve casing and seating upwardly, valve stem connected with the valve head and extending upwardly, a spring to move the valve stem upwardly. a vertically swinging lever connected with the valve stem and adapted to move it, a weighted pivoted locking element arranged described my invention, I
above said lever and having a forward locklng face and a releasing face disposed at an angle to the locking face, sald locking element having an extension, and a member driven by the paddle wheel and carrying a trip arranged to engage said extension.
2. In a flushing device of the character described, a water supply conduit, a water wheel casing connected therewith, a water wheel within said casing, a valve casing connected with said conduit, a valve head mounted within the valve casing and seating up wardly, a valve stem connected with the valve head and extending upwardly, a spring tending to move the valve stem upwardly, a vertically swinging lever pivotally connected with the valve stem, a weighted locking elementhaving its forward end adapted to swing downwardly when released, the locking element being provided at its forward end with a locking face and having a releasing face upon one side, both faces being adapted to engage said lover. a wheel driven by the water wheel, and atrip carried by the wheel and adapted to engage the locking element.
3. in a flushing device of the character descriliied. a water supply conduit, a valve casing connected therein, a valve head within the casing, an upwardly extending valve stem connected with the valve head, a vertically swinging lever connected with the valve stem, a gravity operated locking eleinent pivotallv mounted near and above the lever to engage therewith when the lever elevated and to automatically lock the lever in the lowered position when depressed, and means operated by the passage of water through the conduit to trip the locking element to release the lever to permit the same to move upwardly.

In a flushing device of the character described, a water supply conduit, a valve casing connected therein, a valve head within the casing, an upwardly extending valve stem connected with the valve head, means to move the valve stem upwardly, a vertieally swinging lever connected with the valve stenna pivoted locking element ar ranged above the lever and having one end weighted to automatically descend when the locking element is released, said lever when elevated serving to hold the locking element against downward swinging movement, and the locking element holding the lever depressed when the lever is shifted downwardly, and means operated by the passage of the water through the conduit to trip the locking element and return the same to the elevated position.
