Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 18, 1921. Serial No. 446,081.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VVILLIAM J. SCHULTZ, a citizen of the Jnited States, residing at McKeesport, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Teeming Devices, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The present invention relates to a teeming device and more particularlyto a device for teeming crucible pots. In'the maufacture of crucible steel, the steel is teemea or poured from the crucible pots into a ladle or other receptacle for further use.
The object of the invention is to produce a teeming device for securely holding the pots during the teeming operation.
In the drawings, which illustrate the pre ferred embodiment of the invention,

Referring to the illustrated embodiment of the invention, the teeming device indicated generally by reference numeral 2, is mounted on the edge of the usual platform 3 upon which the crucible pots A are trundled by hand trucks 5. A casting ladle 6 is located in the pit at the edge of the platform to receive the metal from the crucible pots i.
The teeming device comprises a tilting holder or cradle 7 mounted on a carriage 8 to be movable longitudinally along the edge of the platform. The carriage 8 has wheels 9 running along a square rail 10. The rail 10 is pivotally mounted at 11 in suitable supports. One end of the rail 10 carries a large gear wheel 12 which meshes with a pinlon 13 operated by a hand crank i i. A workman by turning the crank 1% can tilt the teeming device from the full line to the dotted line position shown in Figure 2 to pour the metal. A locking device comprising a bar 15 having a cam 16 engaging the rail 10 is provided to lock the teeming device in position on the rail. A pin 17 holds the locking bar 15 in position. While it is preferred, for convenience, to mount the teeming device on the carriage running longitudinally of the pouring platform, such mounting is not essential.
The crucible pots are retained in the cradle or holder 7 during the teeming operation by means of a retaining device or yoke 18.
This yoke 18 is pivoted at 19 to the top of the cradle or holder 7. It has downwardly extending arms provided with counterweights 20 so that the yoke is gravity operated to embrace or release the crucible pot A. The counterweights 20 are adjustable along the horizontal extensions 21 of the yoke arms and are held in position by locking screws 22. This is for the purpose of adjusting the weights so as not to interfere with the potembracing prongs of the pot trucks 5.
As shown in Figure 2, when the teeming device is upright, the yoke 18 is held above the crucible pot 4 so that a pot may be readily placed in or removed from the cradle .7. When the cradle 7 is tilted to pour the metal, the counterweights 20 throw the yoke 18 around the crucible pot 4 into the position indicated in dotted lines in Figure 2, thus securely retaining the pot during the teeming operation. This pot-retaining yoke does away with the necessity of manually holding the pot from sliding out of the teeming device, as has been the usual practice in steel mills heretofore.
lVhile the invention has been specifically illustrated and described in connection with teeming crucible pots in the steel industry, it is to be understood that the invention is not necessarily so limited but may be employed for teeming other receptacles. The invention is therefore not limited to its illusstrated embodiment but may be embodied in other structures within the scope of the following claims. I
I claim:
1. A teeming device, comprising a tilting holder for teeming a pot and means thrown into operation during the tilting of the holder for embracing and retaining the pot, substantially as described.
2. A teeming device, comprising a holder for teeming a pot and means thrown into op eration automatically when the pot is tilted to retain the pot in the holder during the teeming operation, substantially as described.
3. A teeming device, comprising a tilting holder for teeming a pot and a gravity operated means acting automatically upon the tilting of the holder for retaining the pot therein, substantially as described.
4:. A teeming device, comprising a tilting holder for teeming a pot and a counter- Patented Jan. 17, 1922.
Weighted yoke hinged on the holderand arranged to be 'brought into embracing engagement with the pot by the tilting'movement of the holder, substantially as described.
