BENJAMIN F. GREEN, OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHAIRS AND STEP-LADDERS COMBINED.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,363, dated July 1, 1873 application filed Juno 6, 1873. i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. GREEN, of the city of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement on Combined Chair and Step-Ladders; and I do hereby declare that thefollowin g is afull, clear and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing forming a part of this specification, in which- Fig. l is a sectional side view, showing the parts in position for a chair. Fig. 2 is a like view, showing the parts unfolded for a stepladder. Figs. 3 and 4 are detail views.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the several figures.
The object of my invention consists in combining with the two main sections forming a chair and step-ladder, as shown, a frictionclamp and dowel-pins for securing the parts in the folded position, and also metallic terminations for the chair-back to obviate liability for this part to slip on the floor when used as a step-ladder, as hereinafter more fully explained and when to be used as a step-ladder are unfolded readily, without stooping to release the clamp, by placing the foot upon one of the'rounds f and pressing forward on the back of the chair, the clamp yielding to a pressure sufficient to slide the loop of the spring up over the apex of the catch. To give the parts additional rigidity in the closed position with relation to each other the part A is provided with dowel-pins i, and the opposite part with corresponding sockets, as indicated by j, Fig. 2. As the polished wood of the chair is liable to slip on asmooth hard floor I insert serrated or roughened metallic plugs h h in the terminations of the chair-back, as shown more clearly in Fig. 3.
I claim as my invention- The apex spring-clamp (I e, dowels z'j, and serrated plugs h, as-herein shown and described, in combination with the hinged sections A a B b of the chair and ladder, as and for the purpose specified.
BENJAMIN F. GREEN.
