Description

J. ARNOLD. Trunk-Fasteners.
No. 140,338, Y Paxenfedulymss.
' Kmm/fmmw AM, mami/mammie ca wwwa/wels Princess) i Si UNITED` STATES PATENT CDEEIOEo JOHN ARNOLD, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN TRUNK-FASTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,338, dated July 1, 1873; application tiled J une 2, 1873.
. which form a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a trunkfastening, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order tO enable Others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is an outside view, and Fig. 2 an inside view, of my trunk-fastening. Fig. 3 is a perspective view, and Figs. 4 and 5 are cross-sections, of the lock-shaft in the fasten- 1n g.
A represents a metallic casin g of any suitable dimensions, provided with ears a a. on both sides, through which screws, rivets, Or nails are to pass to secure the same to the body of a trunk. The upper edge of the casing A is open to receive the hook end of the hasp B; the main part of said hasp having ears a a for the purpose of being secured to the lid Of the trunk. Along one side within the casin g A is a vertical shaft, C, which, near its upper end, is provided with a segmental projection, d. This projection fits in a recess made in the casing, and allows of the shaft being turned only One-fourth of a revolution. VIJ en the lid of the trunk is pressed down, and the hasp B has entered the casing A, the shaft C is turned as far as the projection d will admit, when said projection will have entered a notch, zr,in the hasp, and thus fastened the same. For opening the trunk, the shaft C is turned in the opposite direction, when the projection d moves out of the notch a: and thus unfastens the hasp.
rlhe shaft O may have a crank, D, formed on its lower end, as shown in the drawing, by means of which to turn the same; or it may be made so as to have akey tit upon its lower end through a hole in the lower end of the casing, and thus answer for a lock as well as a fastening. 'By the use Of this fastening straps Of any kind are entirely dispensed with.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let-ters Patent, is
1. The revolving lock-shaft C provided with the segmental projection d, operating in a recess on the inside of the casing A, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In combination with the shaft C, constructed as described, the hasp B and casing A, all constructed and arranged as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my Own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN ARNOLD.
