Application filed September 141, 1920. Serial No. 110,214.
To all whom it may concern:
I Be it known that I, GUs'rAr Ous'rRoM, a subject of the King of Sweden, residing at Palsundsgatan 7, Stockholm, in the Kingdom of Sweden, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Packing Cigarettes or Similar Articles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a machine for packing cigarettes or similar articles in paper-bags, boxes or the like. According to the invention the machine is so arranged, that it is stopped automatically, if the cigarettes are clogged in a channel or channels leading from a magazine to a portioning chamber or chute, in order that no cigarettes may be damaged in the machine and a proper work of the machine may be ensured.
In the accompanying drawings Fig. 1 shows in a side view partially in section a part of a cigarette packing machine arranged in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22 in Fig. 1.
In the drawings the invention is shown applied to a machine of that class in which the cigarettes 1 are located in a hopper 2 and fed'from the same into two vertical channels 3 and a, separated from one another by a partition wall 5, by two rotating drums 6 and 7 provided in their periphery with grooves 8. As seen from the drawings, similar means are provided at both drums 6 and 7 From each of the said drums 6 and 7 the cigarettes are caused to ass into the channels 3 and 4 respectively by two arms 9 fixed to a non-rotatable shaft 10. Qn the said shaft 10 two arms 11 are swingably mounted, which arms have fingers 12 res ec-. tively. pivoted at 13 to the arms 11. he said arms 11 and fingers 12 bear against the row of cigarettes, acted upon by their weight, thus preventing the cigarettes from sliding upwards on one another. If the cigarettes would clog in the channels 3 or 41, so that the latter is filled up, the cigarettes will raise the fingers l2and the arms 11. A finger 14 of sheet-metal is fixed to the arms 11 respectively and is thus caused to actuate a bell crank lever 15, pivoted at 16 to an electric push-button switch 17, which may be of known construction. The said lever 15 is common to the fingers 14 of both pairs of arms 11, as shown in Fig. 1. The packing machine may be driven by an electric motor, the starter of which is held in active position by an electro magnet, the circuit of which includes the push-button switch in such manner, that the said circuit is broken by the push-button switch 17, as the lever 15 actuates the push-button 18. As the said circuit is broken, the starter is brought into inactive osition by a sprin or the like, so that the motor is stopped and the machine is brought to a standstill.
Conse uently, by means of the mechanism describe the machine is automatically stopped, if the cigarettes are clogged in the channel 3 or 4, so that no cigarettes can be spoiled. After the machine has been rendered ready for re-starting, it is started by actuating the push-button 19 of the switch 17, which is efi'ected by means of a hand lever 20, pivoted at 21.
From the channels3 and a the cigarettes pass down into 'a portioning chamber or chute from which they are pushed into the boxes. Ihe said portioningchamber and the mechanism belonging to the same are not described, as they form no part ofthis invention. Y
The invention may, evidently, be modified in many respects without exceeding the limits of the same.
I claim:
In a machine for packing cigarettes or similar articles in paper-bags, boxes or similar receptacles the combination with a conduit through which the cigarettes pass from a magazine or the like to a portioning device, of a movable member located in the path of the ci arettes passing from the magazine and shi ted by the cigarettes 11 clogged and accumulated, and an electric swltch actuated by the said member, when thus shifted, and adapted to stop the motor of the machine.
In testimony whereof I have afnxed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
