noon HANGER.
iaoaeaa.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Gnonon J. iiinrnn', a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, county of lvlilwaukee, and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Door Hangers, oi? wnich the following is a specification.
My invention. relates to improvements in door hangers.
The object of my invention is to provide a door hanger which will allow the door to move in its own plane to either open or closed position without 'inaterial "friction, without material noise, and with a tendency to come to rest in a halt open position, thereby ensuring care in latching'itfin full open or closed position by making it dillicult to use the door way when the door is not so secured.
My invention is peculiarly applicable to elevator doors used to guard the landing exits or car exits, and for these purposes it is an object of my invention to provide means for safeguarding the users by providing a door which will give warning of carelessness in leaving it unlatched by moving to the half open position and thereby indicating that improper conditions exist, and also tending to prevent person from passing through the door without noticing whether the elevator car is properly positioned at the landing.
Still another object of my invention is to provide means for suspending a door to swing with a pendulum movement, from full closed to full open position, across an intermediate low position, and to hold the door in its own plane during its swinging movements.
The drawing illustrates my improved door hanger as applied to a landing door tor elevators and shows the door in closed position, with dotted lines indicating the open position.
The door 1 is supported from a wall or other support 2 by a set of parallel hanger bars 4t, secured to the support at their upper ends by pivot pins or bolts 5, and to the door at their lower ends by pivot pins or bolts 6. The pivotal connections 6 are preterably made at points near the respective side margins of the door and at a short distance above the horizontal center line. When the door is closed the lower pivotal connections at 6 are oliset from vertical lines through the upper pins in the plane or" the medication fi te Patented Jan. 19, 1922, Application filed rug-la 5, isle. serial no. 315,511.
door and in the direction in which the door moves, when closing. The extent to which the lower connections are thus offset is preferably equalto about one-half of the width o'it the door, whereby the door tends to swing from. either full open or closed position toward an intermediate or half open position with the door at its lowest point. The landing 8 is preferably provided with a guide way 9 in which the lower margin of the dooris loosely engaged. This guide way may comprise a slot or channel in the floor of the landing, but it the door moves along theedge of the landing the edge margin 10 may serve as one wall, and a guard bar 11 may serve as the other wall. In the drawings the wall 12 may be regarded either as the wall of a landing cage or well, or as the wall of an elevator car or traveling cage. In either case the door closes the exit when in the full line position in which it is illustrated, and may carry a double acting latch 15, which engages a catch 16 to hold the door closed, and when the door is open this latch may engage the catch 17 to hold the door in full open position, the latch having oppositely disposed latch heads 18, but any suitable latch mechanism may be employed.
1 claim:
1. The combination with a door and an overhead support, of a set of parallel hanger links pivoted to the door near its side margins and to the overhead support at points vertically above said door pivots when the door is partially open, said door being adapted to swing with a pendulum motion between open and closed positions, and a set of latches adapted to hold the door in its extreme positions, and provided'with 0pcrating means adapted to occupy at all times substantially the same relative position upon he face of the door.
2. The combination with a door, a fixed overhead support and a door guide, of a pair of door hangers operatively connecting the door with its support, and adapted to allow the door to swing upon said support with a pendulum and parallel motion to open and closed positions with maximum downward motion at a point intermediate its extreme open and closed positions, said hanger being pivotally connected with the support at a suiiicient distance above the same to allow the door to swing in an arc of slight curvature.
3. The combination with a door, a fixed overhead support and a door guide, of a door hanger operatively connecting the door with its support, and adapted to allow the door to swing upon said support with a pendulum motion to open and closed positions, said hanger being pivotally connected with the support at a sufiicient distance above the same to allow the door to swing in an arc of slight curvature, and means for maintaining the door with its side margins in a substantially vertical position during the entire swinging movement.
a. :The'combinatio'n with an elevator door and guide, of a fixed overhead support, hanger conneotions between the support and the door adaptechwhen vertically disposed, to hold the door in a partially open position and automatically acting catches on both margins of the door adapted tolook the door in either the full open or full closed position.
5. The combination with a door, a fixed overhead support-and a door guide, of a door hanger operatively connecting the door with its support at a substantial distance above the door, and adapted to allow the door to swing with a pendulum motion to its open and closed positions, latches opera tive at the respective margins of the door to lock the same in either the open or the closed position.
6. The combination with a door, a fixed overhead support and a door guide, of a door hanger operatively connecting the door with its support at a substantial distance above the door, and adapted to allow the door to swing with a pendulum motion to its open and closed positions, latches operative at the respective margins of the door to lockthe same in either the open or theclosedposition,
and a door operating handle connected with both latches, and adapted, when actuated,
to swing the door to release the engaged latch. v r p In testimony whereof I aili-X my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
