noon CHECK.
Specification of Letters Patent. `Patented Jan, 3, 1922,
Application led September 7, v1921. Serial No. 498,979.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I', J osnPH NnroziisAU- minis, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door Checks, of which the following is a specification. f
This invention relates to door checks and particularly to that class of such devices adapted to be attached tov a swinging door to insure of the same to close automatically from normal open positions of use. Y
A11 object of the invention resi les in the construction of a door check of the pneumatic andfpiston operated type designed to be attached to any style ortype of swinging Ydoor or closure, and including provision for regulating the door check whennsed in connectioii with heavy or light doors to produce same. i Y
A further object of the invention resides in the construction of a pneumatic, adjustable door check wherein the operative parts are completely concealed to prevent the ad` mission of dust or dirt which might effect the ysaine from proper functioning and in ad`Y dition to deter unauthorized persons from disarranging or damaging any of its parts.
Jrnother important object of this invention will be found to residevinga novel and improved door` check of the type set forth whichy includes provision whereby the door check may also be utilized to hold a door-Hin desiredopen position when certain of the parts of the check are thrown past a dead center by theopening movement of the door beyond that predetermined by the adjustnient of the check for its automatic closing Li0 operation. n.
An additional object of the invention is directed to a pneumatic door check capable of universal use with practically any type of i swinging closure and one which is extremely simple in construction, consisting of comparatively few parts therefore inexpensive to manufacture, highly efficient and positive in operation, strong, durable and easily adjustable so as to -nieet v the various requirements to which the invention may be put and otherwise capable of being installed without conj siderable labor or mechanical skill. With these` objects in view and others rwhich will be suggested and manifest as the purposeand nature of my invention are `re-` vealed in the following specification and drawing wherein I havey shown but one pre* ferredembodiment thereof, t
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the door check ready to be applied to a door.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section section taken on ynally threaded as at8 as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of thedrawing. j Thecylinder 5 is open at one end and'closed at its outer a gradual or quick closing operation ofthe fend 9. a screw threaded element 10 being provided in said closed end and has a right angular extending aperture 11 communicating with the interior of the casing for a purposepresently to appear. y j
As shown, the collar 7 is preferably ,formed integra-l with a bottom plate 12 formed with a boss 13 for receiving bushing 14 therein,
vthe saidrbottfoin plate being provided with ing. A'top plate 17is also provided, with a boss 18 receiving a bushing 19 and is held in spaced relation from the bottomy plate 12 by means of a plurality of sleeves 2O. and is set cured to the bottom plate 12 by fastening ele-4 ments 21 passing through said sleeves. where by the vertical, squared operating shaft 21 is positioned for rotation with `the bushings 14 and 19 in the bosses 1,3 and`18 during movements of operating` lever 22 and its piv-y eitherV of the opposite sides of the cylindrical casing as may be desired or necessary in the proper mounting of the check on a door. This lever 23 is longitudinally adjustable to 'j adapt the device for use on doors vofvarious sizes.l and correspondingly to permit of the Vproper' cooperationof the checkdevicewith a particular sized door for the desired purposes. The top plate 17 is also provided with an angularly extending flange 25 having openslots 26k therein for attachment to the icol door or closure to which the invention is to be applied. Y
Keyed to the square shaft 2l and in spaced relation thereon, I have provided pair of cam shaped plates 27, 28 which are provided j operable in the cylinder above referred to.
Y Abspring 36, preferably in the form of a coil of flat spring metal, is positioned withinv saidcylinder and on the rod 32, and has onev end bearing against the piston 35 and its opposite end bearing against an annular flange 7 inwardly of the collar 7. As shown, the lever 22 is preferably formedV integral with the vertical shaft 21, and since the door check is secured in its rigid position and moves with the door, the shaft 2l will berotated on its axis and consequently move the cam shaped plates 27 and 28 and the rod 32 inwardly against the resistance ofthe spring.. 36 and upon release of the door, the `spring will 'return the parts to their normal position. The right angular aperturell formed in the screw threaded element 10 permits, the air` to escape from the interior of the cylinder during the closing operation, and since this opening is very small, it will be readily apparent that the closing of the door will take place quite gradually. By moving the screw 10 inwardly or outwardly of the end wall 9,
. the area ofthe aperture ll'may be decreased oi* increased correspondingly, whereby to vary the air compression within the cylinder for controlling the rate of movement ofthe piston therein. Y y j By reason of the adjustment permitted between the lever 32 and the cam shaped plates 27 and 28, it will be obvious that the door check may be regulated to effect a quick or a slow closing operation of the door and furthermore when the spring door check is used in connection with heavy or light doors, the adjustments may be made in advance dependingY on the desired eifect which is required. f l Y A further feature of the invention, it will be noted, is that, when the plates 27-28 and the curved end-31 of the connected Alever 32 are thrown over past the dead center of the vertical shaft 2l', as shown` in dotted Vlines in Fig. 3, the door, to which the door check is secured, will be maintained in its open position as long as desired, but when correspondingly with the initial movement "of the door to closed position, the spring 36 tween-the cam shapedrplates 27--28 and the curved end 3l of the lever 32, as above in- 'dicated and described. The metallic strip designated by 36 is secured by screw fastenfing elements 37 in the respective topand bottom plates and of course prevents the admisison or entry of dirt or dust into the operative part of the door check and in addition prevents unauthorized persons from disarranging or tampering with the structure.
in the accompanying drawings, have illustrated my invention embodied in Vone fornibyway of example, and whichfin practice has been found to be highly satisfactory 1 in obtaining the desired results. It will Vbe obvious however that other embodiments may be adopted and that various changes in the details of construction may be resorted to by those skilled in the art without departing lfrom the spirit and scope ofthe invention. It is` furthermore understoodl that the invention is not necessarily limited or restricted to theprecise elements shown except in so far as such limitationsk are specified in theV subject matter being claimed.
What I claim is Y 1. In a door check the coinbination'of a cylinder having a discharge opening therein a casing detachably connected to said cylinder,`a laterally extending arm and operating soy shaft rotatably carried by said casing, a Y
