R. F. BYRNE. DEVICE FOR SECURING ARTICLES T0 CLOTHESLINES.
- I APPLICATION FILED NOV-12.1921. 1,402,567,
Patented" m. 3, 1922.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DEVICE FOR SECURING ARTICLES To cno'rnnsnmns.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 3, 1922.
Application filed November 12, 1921. Serial No. 514,759.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that REGINALD FRANCIS BYRNE, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at .Liguori, BurkeRoad, East Malvern, in the State of Victoria, Commonwealth of Australia, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Securing Articles to- Clotheslines, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention has been devised to provide a simple and practically everlasting device for use in effectively detachably securing articles to clotheslines which device when manufactured in quantities can be produced at a minimum of cost and probably from short lengths of scrap wire of appreciable gauge.
The device being wholly metallic is formed of Wire surfaced to resist oxidization as by alvanizing and according to this a invention donsists essentially of a length of spring wire helically wound into a few turns with each end ofl'set, one to act as a guide and the other as a handle when fitting or removing same to or from a line.
My specification is accompanied by asheet of drawings which is appended to indicate one practical form of the device but is not to be regarded as restrictive of the scope of the invention. a
Fig. 1 is a plan of the device, and
Figs. 2 and 3 views of same in situ on a clotheslines.
As illustrated in these drawings one end of the helically Wound wire 1 is offset at approximately right angles to the plane of the coil to form a handle 2, and the other end is offset at a slight angle to said plane to form a flared guide 3 and both ends may be coiled as illustrated to prevent possible damage to the clothes in windy Weather. Both the handle and the guide project in opposite directions from the ends of the coil at approximately the same Y point of the periphery of the coil.
If desired the coils of the device may be formed with a gradually diminishing space from the fiared guide toward the handle in order that the grip of the coils may be increased as the handle is forwardly rotated.
Furthermore slight depressions'may be made in the coils at suitable positions to form a slight seating whereby an increased The device may be instantly released by a I direct outward pull or in case of an extra tight grip by backward rotation of the handle. I
I claim: 1. A device for attaching articles to a clothes line consisting of a helical length of wire having its ends projecting in oppo site directions at approximately the same point of the periphery of the helix, one end being formed into a loop of suilicient size to constitute a handle, the other end of the wire being bent at an angle to the plane of the coil and constituting a guide for the line gradually diminishing in width towards the coil. 7 I
2. A device for attaching articles to a clothesline consisting of a helical length of wire having its ends projecting in opposite directions at approximately the same point of the periphery of the helix, one end of the wire constituting a handle extending toward the axis of the helix, the other end of the wire diverging from the plane of the helix and constituting a guide for the line the helix. v
