Specification of Lettere'Petent.
Patented J an. 3, 11922.
Application filed October 5, 1820.,- Eerial No. 414%,828.
, To all whom it'ma concern:
Be it known t at I, CHRISTOPHER W. BAUER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Household Implements, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to afiord a simple, cheap, but efi'ective unitary implement that may be conveniently used for various household purposes; for instance, as
. a door or window check or securing device;
. the blank by'the" in means, all as. herelnafter fully set forth.
as a can opener; as a bottle cap remover; as a pry for opening boxes, etc.; as a wrench; and for numerous analogous purposes ;the invention consisting of an integral metallic structure of the specific character described and claimed herein; and a distinctive fea- .ture being the utilization, as a bottle cap remover, of the s ace and edges created in matron of the can-openn the accompanying drawings,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of my improved conjoined implement Fig. 2 is a view of the fiat metallic blank as die struck, and before the bending thereof;
Fig. 3 is an edge view of the blank shown in Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is an edge view of the blank as bent to form the completed implement;
Fig. 5 is a top view of the implement projected from Fig. 4;
- Fig. 6 is a sectional view of the lmplement taken upon lane of line 66, Fig. 5, and illustratingtiie use thereof as a bottle opener; I i
Fig. 7 is a view illustrating the use of the device as a pry lever; and
Fig. 8 is a sectional view illustrating the use of the implement as a can opener or sheet-metal cutter.
My household implement consists primarily and essentially of a fiat strip of suitable metal such as wrought iron, steel, or any other metal or alloy adapted for the purpose, die-stamped into the shape shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and then bent and sharpened as requisite in the formation of the complete device.
Thus one extremity of what may be designated as the body or handle H of the implement is bifurcated, or claw shaped, being formed with the pointed claws c, c, and
of the incline thus afforded by the main portion H of the plate. In thls connection it is obvious that the implement may be used in a similar manner to jam and prevent the opening of the lower sash of a window, and also for various analogous purposes.
Near its. beveled end w, the handle H may be formed with an opening 1, adapting the device for use as a nut wrench or for analogous purposes,the said opening n being formed with offsets of different width to accommodate nuts, bolt-heads, or the like, of various sizes.
The claw end of the plate H is formed with a bottle-ca opening 6, having convergent side edges 2, and a lower curved edge I)", formed preferably with inwardly tle cap it, as indicated in Fig. 6, the convergent side edges 5', I) being adapted to bear against the top of said bottle cap is during the looseniing operation, in which latter case the body of the device is used as a handle.
The creation of the bottle-cap opening b in the claw end of the device also forms a cross-bar a, which braces the claws c, 0.
A portion of the metal involved in the formation of the bottle-cap opening 6 is utilized in the construction of the can-opening means, consisting of the cutter jaw j and the bearing jaw j, the shanks of which form continuatlons of the plane of the main plate H, and the bending of the claw end C of the device leaving the outer portions of the jaws j, 7" free and unobstructed, and available for use in the cuttin of sheet metal in a manner well known in the canopener art. The free end of the bearing jaw j is formed with lateral extensions, the twisting of which forms a broad fulcrum bearing opposed to the hooked and pointed cutting blade or jaw 9'. Both these jaws j and j if preferred may be separate pieces parts, and nothing to get out of order, the
whole structure being unitary and rigid.
What I claim as m invention and desire 15 to secure by Letters atent is,
A device for the purpose described formed of a single plate 0 flat metal and comprising a ho y portion and a portion at an angle thereto andhavin an opening, and jaws in 20 said openin at thfiiend of the metal, one of said jaws icing a cutter, and the other twisted to form a broad fulcrum bearing.
