Thisv invention relates toimprovements in self-filling fountain pens of the plunger type, or that type which employs reciprocatable piston to ll the barrel within which it is' placed. One of the objects of my invention is to provide a tWo part barrel pen having a cap that will i'it either end, one end AcarryinO the pen sectiointhe other end having projecting therefrom a handle provided to assist in the operation of the plunger. further object of my invention is to provide means to loclr the plunger against movement after it has .been operated to fill the barrel, the locking means normally forniinga continuation of the barrel of the pen, but arranged for removal When the plunger is to be actuated.

A more detailed description of my invention Will hereinafter appear in connection With the accompanying drawing, wherein Fig. 1 is a longitudinal sectional view, partly in elevation, of a pen embodying my improvements;

My improved pen consists or" the Ausual barrel member 5 carrying a pen section 6 at one end, which in turn carries a pen 7, said barrel member 5 being closed at one end as at 8, excepting for the opening 9 through which the piston 10 for the plunger 11 passes. Fig. 1 illustrates the pen as having been filled. Under this condition plunger 11 will be located at the closed end of the Vbarrel 5. To lill the pen, the plunger will be moved to the pen section end of the barrel (see Fig. t), to excludeV air from the barrel. When plunger 11 is again drawn to closed end of the barrel, linl; will be drawn into the barrel.l l

After the barrel is filled, it is desirable that the plunger' be held against movement in- Specireation of Letters Patent.

order that the ink will not be forced out of theV barrel. To accomplish this result, l provide a supplemental tubular barrel niember or extension 12 which is removably sec uredv to the closed end ofthe barrel, and `which forms an extension of the barrel under normal conditions. Y At such times when the barrel is filled, the plunger 11'Will be located, as-has been stated, at the closed end of the barrel; hence, piston 10 will extend from the closed end of the barrel, and unless held against movement could be forced in- Wardly, whereby ink would be forced out of the barrel. To hold the piston against movement, l utilize the supplemental tubular extension 12. To removably connect the extension 12 to the barrel 5, provide the same with threads 14 at one end to engage the threads 15 on the nib 16 extending from the closed end of the vbarrel 5, and the opposite end with threads 17 to'engage threads 18 carriedby the handle 19 for the plunger 10. The diameter of the threaded nib 16 Will be greater than the diameter of the handle 19; hence', the extension can be removed from the barrel 5 or applied thereto by being slipped over the handle 19;

`l/Vhen the pen is to be filled, entension l2 will be removed by rotating saine to cause the threaded portions to be unscreived from the nib 16 and handle 19, after Which it canv be slipped off over handle 19. After the pen has been filled, extension 12 Will be slipped over handle 19 and moved toward nib 16 until threads 14 and 15 engage. At the same time, threads 17 and 18 will engage, after extension 12 has been rotated to cause end 20 of the extension 12 to abut end 21 of the barrel 5, the barrel, extension and plunger will be locked together, forming a rigid structure, and locking the plunger against movement. 22 indicates a cap which is applicable to either end of the pen, as is usual. The handle 19 is preferably of a color differing from the color of the rest of the pen.

What l claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. ln a self-filling fountain pen, a barrel, a plunger'within same, a rod carried by the plunger passing through one end of the barrel, and extending therefrom, when said barrel is filled, a removable tubular eXtension carried by the barrel to cover said rod, and means earried by the extension to lock the plunger against movement after said bar-'4 rel has been filled andthe extension applied u to the barrel.

2. In a self-filling fountain pen, a barrel, a plunger within same, a rod carried by the Y plunger passing trough one end of the barrel Arel and extending therefrom when the barrel is filled, a removable tubular extension earriedV by the barrel to cover said rod', a threaded handle carried by the rod at its outer end, and threads carried by the adjacent end of the barrel extension to Yengage the threads on the handle7 when said extension is applied to the barrel, said extension having a threaded engagement with the barrel of the pen.

4. In a self-filling fountain pen. a barrel, a plunger Within same, a rod carried by the plunger passing through one end of the barrel and extending therefrom when the barrel is filled, a. removable tubular extension carried by the rod at its outer end, and

threads'carried by the adjacent end of the barrel Yextension to' ,engage the Vthreads on the handle, when said extension is .applied tothe barrel, said extension having a threaded engagement lWith the barrelo'f the pen, the diameteriof the threaded portion of the extension, which engages the barrel vbeing greaterthan the diameter of said handle and its threaded portion, wherebyV said eX- tension can beslipped over said handle.

In a self-filling fountain pen, a barrel,

a plunger Within same, a rod carried by the plunger passing through one end of the barrel and extending therefrom when the barrel is iilled7 a removable tubularV exten` sion `carried by the barrel to cover said rod, a handle carried by the rod of less diameter than the bore of the extension and 'also o' that portion of the extension which engages the barrel, whereby said extension can be slipped over said handle. and means carried by theA extension to engage said handle to lock the plunger against movement.
