I To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that ADALINE EMERSON, of San Francisco, California, a citizen of the United States and residing in the city of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ladies Garments, of which the following is aspecification.

This invention relates to ladies undergarments and is directed particularly to providing a novel andadvantageous construction of ladies drawers. I

()ne object of my invention is to provide a pair of ladies drawers which may avoid the necessity of drawing the garment down over the head or up from the feet of the wearer.

Another object of this invention is to provide a pair of ladies drawers which may be donned by the wearer with unusual case and facility and also be comfortable to the wearer.

A further object of my invention is to provide a pair of drawers of this character in which the leg portions may be opened flat leaving one continuous smooth piece of fabric for laundering purposes. I

My invention is of particular advantage in that it provides a very loose and comfortable drawer construction and has special application as an undergarment to be worn when horse back riding or dancing.

Other objects and advantages of this invention will appear from the detailed description and the features of novelty will be particularly pointed out in the claims.

Referring in detail to the drawing, the pair of drawers, the embodiment of my invention there shown, is seen to be formed Specification of Letters Patent.

from two pieces of material stitched together as at 10, cut .to provide a waist port on 11 and two symmetrically disposed portions 12 and 13 extending therefrom adapted to form the leg portions of the drawers. The waist portion 11 is of sufiicient width to comfortably and yet securely fit around the wearers waist, while the leg portions 12, 13 extend out fromsaid waist portion gradually widening in apron like fashion so as to accommodate comfortably the legs of the wearer as will be readily understood. The piece 12, adapted to form the back portion is made longer than the front portion 13 so as to allow for a crotch portion as will be readily understood Of course, the portions 11, 12 and 13 may be cut from one piece of material instead of two as shown in the drawing and described.

One of the leg portions such as the back portion 12 is provided with a connecting tab 14 at the center near the bottom which may be conveniently buttoned beneath the crotch to'the other portion 12 to close the front and back portions in drawer fashion as will be readily understood. Along the free edge of one of these portions such as the front portion 13 I provide fastening means such as buttons, hooks or snaps 15 whereby the garment may be buttoned around the body to the other portion 12 which is provided with corresponding sockets, eyes or the like receiving means for the fastening orbuttoning means 15. By making the garment open at the side it is readily accessible for adjustment on the body. of the wearer and also gives a much neater appearance. In order to allow for an-adjustment in the size of the waist an elastic 17 may be provided in the waist portion.

If desired, a camisole portion 18 may be provided together with straps 19 extending therefrom or other suitable means for securing the garment on the body of the wearer. This camisole portion may be made in the form of a separate piece stitched to the portions 12 and 13 or may be continuouse therewith, and provided at the side with fastening means 15 and 16'.

Of course, the garment may be suitably finished as with a ruffle 20 running from the waist line at the side around the bottom up to the waist line on the opposite side. This ruffle may be attached in any suitable manner such as by hemstitching or machine stitching or ordinary hand sewing. To further provide for neatness in finish the edge of the ruflie may be pi'cot finished or provided with an ordinary hem or lace edging.

The cut is preferably in the form of an apron and when the two parts are folded over as in Fig. 2, the garment has the appearance of an apron and as will be readily understood may be opened out into one piece and ironed as any ordinary apron. In the use of the garment, the wearer has only to button the two portions 12 and 13 about El e body at the side and then to adjust the lhis garment is of particular advantage to persons of poor physical balance who find it diflicult to maintain their equilibrium while donning drawers of the usual construction by first inserting one leg and then the other. In fact, this garment may be donned and adjusted in sitting posture.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. A substantially fiat ladies undergarment adapted to be wrapped about the body of the wearer by a horizontal enveloping motion, comprising a camisole portion, a drawer-portion, an elastic 'waist band between said camisole and drawer portions, and means for detachably fastening the free side edges of said undergarment together. 2. A ladies undergarment ada ted to be opened out sidewise to form a su stantially flat surface wider at the hips than at the waist, comprising a front panel, a rear panel substantially similar to said front panel, means for detachably securing said panels together along their side edges, and a tab secured to one of said panels for detachably securing said panels together near the lowermost parts thereof for forming the leg portions of said undergarments, and an elastic band at the waist line of said undergarment.

3. A ladies undergarment adapted to be opened out sidewise to form a substantially fiat surface com rising a camisole portion decreasing in width from the upper edge of said garment to the waist, an elastic waist band, and a drawer portion increasing in width from said waist band to the hip portion of said garment, means for detachably securing the side edges of said garment together, and means for detachably securing two points on the bottom edge of said garnient together.

An apron like ladies undergarment approximately trapezodial in outline and adapted to be opened out sidewise to form a substantially flat surface, two free edges in the periphery of said undergarment, said edges being adapted to be brought together about the body of the wearer by a horizontal enveloping motion to 'form one of the sides of said undergarment, a camisole portion decreasing in width from the upper edge of said garment to the waist comprising a front panel and a rear panel continuous with and similar to said front panel, an elastic waist band, a drawer portion increasing in width from said waist band' to the hip portion of said undergarment comprising a front panel and a rear panel continuous therewith, a rounded bottom edge in said drawers portionhaving a central notch therein, said undergarment being adapted to be folded about a line passing through the apex of said notch, means extendingalong said free side edges to a point between said waist band and said bottom edge for detachably securing said side edges together, and a tab secured to said bottom edge between said notch and one of said side edges arranged to be detachably fastened to another point in said bottom edge, whereby leg holes are formed between said tab, the joined side edges and said notch.
