Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Jan. 3, 1%22.
Application filed December 11, 1920. Serial No. 429,997.
has for its object the provision of means worn on one or both hands of an ice skater and provided with a penetrating member adapted to be dug into the ice at the edge of a hole therein so that a skater falling through the ice may extricate himself, the penetrating member taking positive grip so that the skater may pull himself out of the hole which could not be done if he wore ordinary gloves or mittens.
An important and more specific object is the provision of a safety device of this character which is formed preferably as either a glove or a mitten, thougha mere hand encircling strap is conceivable, provided With a metallic prong or penetrating member adapted to bite into the ice;
An additional object is the provision'of a device of this character which will besimple and inexpensive in manufacture, highly eflicient in use, durable in service, and a general improvement in the art. 7
With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and-illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a perspective equipped with my device, v
Figure 2 is an elevation of my device detached,
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view tlnc'pugh my device removed from the glove, an
Figure 4: is a cross sectional view.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, I have shown a glove designated by the letter A. While a glove is described and shown it is to be understood that a mitten may be used or a palm engaging member as these modifications would come within the scope of the invention.
In carrying out my invention I provide an view of a glove I elongated metal plate 10 which has its intermediate portion out along a U-shaped line to define a tongue 11 which is free at one end. The free end of the tongue is deflected at an angle, as indicated at 12, and is notched or cut away to form spaced penetrating prongs or points 13. Adjacent its edges the plate 10 is formed with a plurality of perforations 14 by means of which the plate may be secured to the glove or mitten as by means of suitable stitches 15. It is possible that the plate 10 might be located at one of a variety f points upon the glove though in actual practice I prefer to locate it at the edge of the glove between the wrist and the little finger.
In the use of the device it will be seen that a skater wearing one or .two gloves or mittens provided with my device, will be able to pull himself out of a hole in case of accident as when he reaches out he will naturally bring the back edge portions of his hands upon the ice which will cause the points 13 to penetrate and provide an efficient grip which will enable him to gain sufficient hold that he may pull himself up and out.
lVhile I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is of course to be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form, construction, and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
l. The combination of a hand covering with a metallic member secured thereon and provided with a penetrating prong, said metallicv member being located at the edge of the palm portion of said covering intermediate of the base of the little finger and the open or wrist end of said covering.
2. The combination with a glove or mitten, of a metallic member secured thereon and provided with a penetrating prong, the metallic member occupying a position longitudinally of the back edge of the palm portion between the base of the little finger portion and the open end of the glove or mitten, said penetrating prongbeing formed on a resilient tongue with the free end of the tongue facing toward the open end of the glove 0r mitten.
3. In combination with a glove or mitten, an elongated metallic plate secured upon an elongated resilienttongue having one end the glove or mitten and extending longituangularly deflected and formed with penedinally thereof intermediate of the base of trating prongs.
the little finger and the open end of the In testimony whereof I hereto ailix my 10 5 glove or mitten, said plate having its intersignature. V
