T 0 all fw /Lom may concern Be it known that l, HENRY @.l-laNxA, a citizen of the United States, residing at 1229 Castro Street,v ualland, in the county of Alameda, State of California, havc invented new and useful Combined Camp Storage Boxes and rFables, of'which the following is a specification in such full and clear terms as will enable those skilled in the art to construct and use the same. Y Y
This invention relates to a combined camp storage box and table and its objectis to provide means whereby the materials for camping or picnicling purposes may be stored and carried and two of which boxes may be assembled together and used as a table for camp or picnic purposes.
lt will be understood by those familiar with automobiles that there are on almost all machines steps somewhat lower than the Hoor of the car body. lt is customary to place boxes of vsome kind upon these steps and in the present instance a box is provided for each step, each'of which boxes is provided with a cover which may be opened to provide a table when the boxes are removed from the machine and assembled in a suitable holder. y
. In the present instance the two boxes are placed so that their covers will open in opposite directions and the holder is providedL with means to securely hold the two boxes together at the proper height for the box lids to be used asa table.
rlhe legs for supporting the boxes are also provided with means for securely holding the two boxes together and for holding the two box lids horizontally. These legs are also so arranged as to fold into a small compass when not in use.
Another object of the invention is to provide means whereby the two boxes may be securely fastened to the running board of the car. l
Other objects of the invention will appear as the description proceeds.
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings in which the same reference numeral is applied to the Same portion throughout, butl l am aware that there may be modifications thereof.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the two boxes as they appear when assembled for use as a table. Y
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the two boxes as they appear when assembled for use as a table.
' Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line F ig. 2.
Fig. Ll: is a plan view of the two boxes assembled for use as a table.
rEhe numerals 1 and` 2 indicate the two boxes which are rectangular in form and of a suitable height and width and length to lit on the ordinary automobile steps. These boxes may be provided with suitable partitions, in the present instance indicated by 3 to .S inclusive. l/lrhich partitions divide the box into suitable compartments to prevent the materials placed therein from being broken or jammed in one end of the box.
Each box is provided with a cover as indiv cated at 9 and 10, said covers having suitable hinges 11 to 1a inclusive for connecting them with the boxes. The covers are also provided with suitable locks 15 and 16 for holding the covers closed.
Each box is provided with four cleats 1T to 20 inclusive, which cleats form guide ways adjacent the ends of the boxes for the upper ends of the legs 21 to 24 inclusive. The legs are connected together by means of horizontal bars 25 and 26. Each of which is slotted as indicated at 27 and 2S to afford means for the adjustment of the legs and to ai'ord means whereby the legs may be folded together for transportation.
Bolts 29 and 30 having suitable wing nuts connected to cross bars and legs, and afford the fulcrum for binding the two boxes together. The legs 22 and 24 each havinga brace as indicated at 32 and 33, slightly longer than theV width of the boxes for spreading the legs at the bottom and tightly drawing the two boxes together.
The braces may have notches at their ends as indicated at 35 to prevent dislodging them laterally from the legs 21 and 23.
ln order to secure the boxes in place on the running board, each running board is provided with a holder to receive bolts 36 and 37, which bolts have suitable wing nuts applied to them when the boxes are placed on the running board to prevent them from being thrown ofi', as the machine travels over rough roads.
vIt will be observed that when the boxes are in use aS a table, that each box lid 9 and l() rests upon the top of two of the legs, said legs affording the means to prevent the box lid from turning below the horizontal position when the table is in use.
vVhat I claim is as follows, but various modifications may be made in the construction shown in the drawings and above particularly described form, within the purview of my invention.
l. A combined storage box and table cornprising a pair of storage boxes having lids, legs for supporting and binding the two boxes together at a; suitable distance from the floor level, said legs ail'ording means for supporting the box lids when the lids are open.
2. A combined storage box and table comprising a pair of lidded boxes having guides on one side, legs adapted to lit the guides and means to bind the legs and. two boxes to- 4. A combined storage box and table coni-V prising a pair of storage boxes having hinged lids, legs for supporting and binding the two boxes together at a suitable distance from the floor level and a brace for supporting the legs to hold the two boxes together. In testimony whereoi` I have hereunto set iny hand this 29th day of May A. D. 1920.
