Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan.3,1922.
Application filed April 23, 1921. Serial No. 463,847.
To all 10 ham it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLARD S, RICHARD- SON, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Quebec, Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Clamping Devices for arpets; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in clamping devices for carpets and more especially that class applicable for stair carpets.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a clamping device so arranged that it will engage the carpet and secure the inner folds thereof both to the tread and riser portions of the stairs at their juncture, thus preventing the carpet from slipping.
Still another object of the invention is the provision of a device such as above referred to, which includes screw elements for engaging the riser and tread portions of the stairs, together with a key for actuating said screw elements, said key being only removable when the elements are fully engaged in the material of the stairs.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a device such as above referred to, which will be comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture, reliable and eflicient in use, and readily operated.
With the above and other objects in view, the present invention resides in the novel features of construction, formations, combinations, and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanyingdrawings, forming a part of the present application, and in which: 7
Figure 1 is a side view of the clamp applied;
Figure 2 is a similar view with the key removed;
Figure 3 is a front elevation of the construction shown in Figure 1;
Figure 4: is a corresponding View to that shown in Figure 2;
Figure 5 is a longitudinal sectional view taken through Figure 1;-
Figure 6 is a similar view taken through Figure 3;
Figure 7 is a side view of the key removed; and,
V teclt bly cated for projection through the horizontal and vertical portion of the brackets, screw elements shown at 18. A key is shown at 19 and is provided with an angular opening extending entirely therethrough, as at 20, which receives the square or angular heads 21 of the screw elements 18. Obviously upon the rotation of these screw elements by means of the key 19 and by virtue of the threaded engagement between the threaded elements 18 and the sleeves 17, these elements will be projected through the extensions 15 and 16 of the brackets and through the carpet into the riser and tread portions 11 and 12 of the steps, and that the bracket will be in engagement with the carpet holding the said carpet against slipping. The ends of the key 19 are provided with notches 22 through which the heads 21 of the screw elements 18 can be passed after they have been projected through the sleeves to their full limit, thus making it possible to remove the key only when the said screw elements are in such projected position.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be manifest that a clamp for carpets is provided, which will fulfil all of the necessary requirementsof such a device, and it should be understood in this connection that various minor changes in the specific details of construction can be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to pro- Letters Patent is clamp such as described, including an angular bracket, screw elements projecting therethrough, and means for projecting said elements through said bracket.
2. A clamp such as described, including an angular bracket, sleeves arranged in alinement at the opposite ends of said bracket, screw elements threaded in said sleeves, and a key engaging said screw elements for projecting them through the sleeves and bracket.
3. A clamp such as described, comprising a bracket including vertical-and horizontal extensions, alining sleeves formed upon said extensions and interiorly threaded, screw elements threaded in the sleeves and proecting through the bracket, and a key removably engaging the screw elements, as
and for the purposes .set .forth.
4. A clamp such as described, including a bracket comprlsing angular extensions, threaded sleeves :tormed thereon and disposed in alinement, screw elements threaded in said sleeves for extension through said bracket, sald screw elements having angular heads, a key having an angular openlng threadechscrewelements threaded in said sleeves for projection through the bracket, said screw elements havlng angular heads formed thereon, a key having an angular opening thereinfor slidably receivmg the angular' heads of the screw elements, said key havingnotches formed therein through which the angular heads may pass when said screw elements "are projected to the full limit of their movement through the bracket and being held against displacement when said screw'el'ements are partially retracted.
