IMPROVEMENT IN KlNDLlNG-WOOD CUTTERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,225, dated June 24, 1873; application filed March 1, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, NIcoLAs SoNNIcHsEN, of San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a new and Improved Kindling-Wood Cutter, of which the following is a specification The figure is a perspective view of my invention, illustrating the working ofthe same.

The object of my invention is to supply an instrument, by the use of which cuts and bruises occasioned by splitting kindling-wood with hatchets or knives may be avoided, and the cutting into smaller pieces facilitated. It may also be adapted to the use of coopers, carpenters, or others working in wood.

My invention consists of a knife with a handle attached to a vertical frame, which is applied to some convenient place in the kitchen, or other object, and has several step` like rests supporting the wood, which is split by the pressure of the knife upon it.

In the drawing, A represents the frame of wood, or iron, or other suitable material which may be secured or otherwise fastened to the required place. At the lower part thereof are step-like projections B, which may be made of one entire piece With frame A, or of different pieces placed above each other. These steps B may also be made adjustable, to slide up and down. The upper sides of steps B are slightly inclined toward frame A, and give thereby a better rest to the wood placed thereon for splitting. To the upper part of frame A is rigidly applied, by screws or otherwise, a projecting double lug, C, to which is pivoted the knife or cutter l), supplied with a handle E.

The wood to be split rests with one end on one of steps B, to suit its size, the other end being held with the left hand, till the right hand brings the knife D to bear upon it, splitting the same by the pressure thereon. A box or basket maybe placed below the cutter, so that the splinters may fall therein.

I am aware that a knife, pivoted and adjustable, to cut sticks of different lengths is not broadly new, and therefore desire to disclaim this as my invention.

Having thus described myiuven tion, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The frame A having step-projections B, and the knife D pivoted thereabove, at its front end, as and for the. purpose described.
