Description

L. CLEATON.
PLOW ATTACHMENT. I APPLICATION FILED JAN-29, 1919.

Sacks Lnwis CLEATON; or rn-arnrnvrnnn, Texas.
PJLOW' 'a'r'rncnr'annr."
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIS CLEATON, a. citizen of the United States, residing at Prairieville, in the county of Kaufman and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plow Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to plow attachments, and more particlarly to an attachment for the landside of a plow.
One of the main objects of the invention is to provide an attachment which may be readily applied to a worn landside so as to compensate for the portion of the landside which has been worn away, this attachment providing a reinforcing and wearing element which will materially increase the,
length of life of the landside.
A further object is to provide a device of the character stated of simple construction and operation which may be readily applied to a landside of standard construction, this device having a reinforced or thickened lower portion constituting a runner the outer surface of which is substantially flush with the outer surface of the landside so as not to in any way interfere with the plowing operation.
Further objects will appear from the de tailed description.
In the drawings:.
Figure 1 is a side view of a landside of standard construction before being used sufficiently to be worn away to any appreciable extent.
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the manner in which the landside wears away after being used for a considerable time.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing an attachment constructed in accordance with my invention applied.
Fig. 4 is a side view of the attachment.
Fig. 5 is a section taken substantially on line 55 of Fig. 3.
As is well known, the landside of a plow of ordinary construction has a tendency to wear away with continued use, the lower portion of the landside being eventually worn to a considerable extent so as to be materially lessened in width, the lower edge of the landside being of slightly arcuate Specificationof Letters Patent; I Patented De e,
at. rear.
shape and tapering rearwardly, as at 1. When a landside-has worn to this extent, it is practically useless and, usually, has to be replaced. To avoid this, I provide an attachment designated generally by 2, this attachment comprising a substantially rectangular body 3 which is provided at its lower edge with a laterally projecting rib 4 which cooperates with the lower portion of body 3 to provide a thickened runner or wearing element for supporting 'the attachment 2 during passage of the same along the furrow. Thisbody isprovided, adjacent each end, with a transverse slot 5, these slots being adapted to receive securing bolts 6 which are inserted through the landside A and project through the slots, securing nuts 7 being screwed on the ends of these bolts thus securing the attachment 3 tightly to the landside. In practice, the attachment is so positionedas to bring the forwardend of runner 4 against thelower edge of landside A, the bolts 6 and nuts 7 associated therewith serving to effectually secure the attachment in place. As will be noted more clearly from Fig. 5, the shoulder or rib 1} corresponds in thickness to the landside A so that the outer face of this rib is flush with the outer face of the landside thus avoidingv all projections such as would tend to interfere with the plowing operation while providing a relatively heavy runner at the lower edge of the attachment which serves to support and steady the attachment and the land side, this runner being also well able to withstand wear to which it is subjected.
By applying the attachment in the manner described, the plowshare may be continued in use for a relatively long time, the heavy runner at the lower edge of the body 3 of the attachment which is subjected to the greatest amount of wear serving to insure a relatively great length of life of the attachment and the landside supporting the same. As will be noted, this attachment may be readily applied to a landside of standard construction without necessitating any variations thereof or any material changes in the landside other than the provision of the openings to receive the securing screws 6. In this manner, I avoid all necessity for throwing away a landside which has become worn to an appreciable extent, while producing a combined landside and attachment the life of which is much longer than that of the original landside, the attachment being readily manufactured at very small cost and applied with but little trouble.
What I claim is: An attachment for alandside of a plow share to compensate for uneven weanng away comprising a plate disposed against. a one side face of the landside, a laterally extending flange on the lower edge-of the plate to provide a broad ground-engaging sur-i face and having its forward endin contact with the lower edge of the landside to support the same, the flange and plate being reduced toward the point of contact of the landside and flange, and fastening means
