Description

PLOWPOINT. No. 484,758. 'Patented oct. 18, 1892..
a mnlvw i l "Hummm i i OW lllIl III Gvewy 50a/715 @dk WW@ UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE SEARS, OF ONSLOW, IOWA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO WILLIAM H. UNDERWOOD,`OF SAME PLACE.
PLOW-POINT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 484,758, dated October 18, 1892.
Application filed .Tune 25. 1892. Serial No. 438,025. (No model.)
To all whom, t Lety concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE SEARS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Onslow, in the county of Jones and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plow-Points, ot which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The object of this improvement is to provide a ready-made plow-point for shovel-plows that will hold itself on the shovel-plate while being heated in the tire and while being welded without being previously drilled and riveted tothe plate and without the aid of tongs.` These results are attained by the mechanism illustrated in the drawings herewith led as part hereof, in which the same letters of reference denote the same parts in the different views.
Figure l is a perspective representation of a plow-shovel provided with myimprovernent. Fig. 2 is a view of the same inverted. Fig. 3 is a view of the point detached. Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the shovel and point, taken on the line x a; of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is the blank.
A is the shovel, having the usual bolt-holes for attaching it to the stock of the plow and provided with bevels forming cutting-edgesl finish with the surface of the plate A when applied thereto. By reason of the recess C (shown in Fig. 3) between the parts B B and the inward tension of the spring-plate B B the point when moderately heated may be slipped over in a self-sustaining manner the point of the shovel A, when the part B may be easily bent to and made to conform with the bevels a of the shovels, and the point will be thereby secured in the position shown, which will not be disturbed by the heat and welding process, whereby the point B B may be quickly, economically, and durably applied to the shovel.
Having explained the features of my improvement, whatI claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
An attachable se1fsustaining plow-point made from a single blank of metal and bent at its center to form a composite plate comprising two substantially-circular members coincident and coextensive, occupying parallel horizontal planes in the same vertical plane, and each rearwardly reduced to a thin edge, the bend forming the plow-point, and the two'members by their mutual inward tension serving to hold the point temporarily during attachment.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE SEARS.
