Specification of Letters Patent. Patented E60. 2'?, 1921.
Application filed March 7, 1921. v Serial No. 456,410.
To all @from 'it may conce/rn.'
Be it known that i, AUGUST B. Brien, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Jersey City, in the county of'Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful linprovementsl in Girdles; and i do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,
such as will enable others skilled in the art to which'it appertains, to make and use the same. Y v
Vlilly invention relates to improvements in ladies girdles of the type employing an elastic belt which usuallyy carries hose sup porters, and the 4principal'object of my invention is to associate a relatively narrow strap, such as a silk or satinribbon, with the elastic belt in such manner as to allow the user to restrict the waistline, independently ofthe action of the elasticbelt.
.In carrying out the abovel end, a further object is to provide a ygirdle composed of upper vand lower elastic bands connected by a plurality of separate inelastic strips between which rthe above mentioned strap or ribbon is laced. By this provision, not only is lthe ribbon or the like properly guided and held in place, but the inelastic strips will not under any circumstances become of greater height than the width of the ribbon, with the result thatmuch better results are obtained than could be had if the belt structure were elastic throughout.
Yet another object is to provide anovel construction which prevents the usual corset fasteners which are used from coming' in contacteitherwith the body or the apparel of the user.
With the foregoing in view, the invention resides in the novel construction and association of parts hereinafter describedand claimed, the descriptive matter being supplemented by the accompanying' drawings.
Figure 1 is a perspective view partly broken away and in section, showing a girdle constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a detail horizontal sectional view as indicated by line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a detail vertical sectional view as designated by line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
In carrying out'my invention, l employ a relatively wide elastic belt divided down its front and provided at its meeting ends with reinforcing strips 1 and 2 which carry the lfront hose supporters- 3, 'similar supporters 4 being connected in any suitable way with the back portion ofthe belt. Associted with the belt and extending from end to end thereof, is a relatively narrow inelastic strap, such asa silkvo'r satin ribbon.l the ends of this ribbon or the like1 being adapted to be connected to each other, preferably by tying asv indicated at 6in Fig. 2. It will thus be seen that the waist-linemay berestricted regardless of the elastic action of the belt.
In the preferred form of construction, the belt is composed of upper and lower elastic bands 7 and 8 respectively, which are spaced apart vertically and connected at their adjacent edges by a plurality ofinelastic strips 9 which are disposed edge to edge and stitched at 10 to the band. Each of the strips 9 may well be composed of two lengths of ordinary corset stay covering, stitched-together as indicated at 11. It'will be understood 'however that this construction need not be followed in all cases. 1
The slight spaces existing' between ythe 'disconnected edges of the vertical strips 9,
constitute a plurality of vertical slots 12 through which the strap or fthe like 5v is passed. The ends of this strappreferably pass beneath the reinforcing strips land 2, and are tied together before said strips are connected, whereby vthe knot 6 is hidden from view when the belt is completely ap- Each of the reinforcing strips 1 and is preferably formed of a sheet' of fabric folded upon itself to providetwo 'plies which are stitched at their free edges to the band 8 as indicated at 13. A stay 14 is positioned between the plies of the reinforcing strip 2 and carries well known headed studs 15 which project forwardly beyond said strip 2. Between the plies ofthe reinforcing strip 1 and spaced inwardly from the folding line 16 of said strip, is another stay 17 having metal eyes 18 which project through the inner ply for co-action with the headed studs 15. The portion of the strip 1 between the stay 17 and the folding line 16 constitutes a flap 19 adapted to cover the fasteners 15 and 1 8 to prevent them from injuring the users clothing and it kwill be seen that since the carrying stays 14 and 17 for these fasteners. are located between the inner and outer plies of the reinforcing strips l and 2, they cannot touch the esh, even if the girdle is worn directly against the skin.
The stays 14C and -l7'fstrengthenthe frontortion of the girdle to the desired extent, but in most instances, the back portion ofthe belt is preferably provided with two stays 20=whichvextend acrossthe bands `7 and/8 and two of the connecting strips 9.
Attention Vmay here be directed to the fact that the vbands `i' and S'are relativelyfnarrow and wide respectively, and ify desired, in manufacturing the girdle, the band 8 may be formed by stitching two, strips 8a together on the line 8b (see Fig. l). By this construction, it is only necessary` to carry in stock one width of elastic for the formation of the bands y7 and 8, one width of such elastic suflicing for the band 7, While two widths are secured together for t-he band `8. I wish it understood that while this detail of construction may be followed if desired, it is not essential.
The `device constructed as or substantially as shown and described, may be easily and inexpensively Vmanufactured and marketed, yet will be highly efcient and in every way desirable, particular attention being directed to the fact that the waistline may be restricted to any desired extent, regardless of the elastic action of the belt. rlhe elasticity of this belt above and belowl the strap o, however, will gracefully merge the restricted waistline into the adjacent portions of the ligure as will bel readily understood. lThe manner of forming-the flap 19 to protect the clothing against the fasteners 15 and 1S is also considered a rather important feature of the invention.
Since excellent resultsha-ve been obtained from the several details shown and' described, these details may be followed if desired. I wish itunderstood however that withinthe scope of the invention as claimed, numerous' changes may be made.
claim: y l. A girdle'comprising a relatively wide have its ends connected to each other to restrict the waistline independently Vof the elasticity of the belt.
2.. A girdle comprising. a relativelywide elastic belt having connecting means at its ends and providedV intermediate its edges with circumferentially spaced vertical slots, and a relatively narrow inelastic` strap passed through said slots and adaptedto have-its ends connected to each other yto .restrict the waistline independently of the elasticity of the belt.
3. A girdle comprising a relatively wide belt formed of upper and lower bands of elastic material and a plurality of separate inelastic strips disposed edge to edge and connecting said bands in vertical spaced relation, and a relatively inelastic strap laced through the spaces betweenesaidy strips and passing alternately in front vof and behind said strips, the ends of said strap being adapted for connection with each other for the purpose specified.
4;. A supporter comprising a body encircling portion divided at its front and provided with reinforcing strips along its edges, one of said strips being formed of two plies of fabric united with each other at the edge and having their other edges secured to the supporter, the inner ply having vertically spaced slots spaced inwardly, from said united edges, a stay between said plies havingl eyes passing outwardly through said slits, and fastenersvon the other reinforcing strip coperable with said eyes, the portion of said one reinforcing strip between said stay and said united edges forming a `covering flap for said fastenersl and eyes when engaged.
In testimony whereof I havehereunto set my hand. 1
