IMPROVEMENT lN BOOT-JACKS- Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,179, dated J one 24, 1873; application filed May 3, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HORACE ARNOT, of Barclay, in the county of Bradford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Boot-Jack, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a top view of my improved bootjack, and Fig. 2 is a front View of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of my invention is to furnish a simple, durable, and convenient boot-jack, which takes hold firmly of the boot at toe and heel, and allows its easy pulling off.
My invention consists of two jaws with inclined slotted parts, which grasp the heel by the action of the foot on a pivoted U-shaped rod frame guided therein.
In the drawing, A represents the foot-rest of wood or other suitable material, made of oblong shape, and with a curved recess for the heel. lts lower side near the curved recess is also slightly recessed for the ends of jaws B, which are pivoted to it. A washerplate, a, is placed between jaws B and footrest A, when the latter is made of wood. Each jaw B has an end, b, in the shape of a right angle, of which that side parallel to the 7 narrow side of foot-rest A, is pivoted to the same at its outer end. The other leg of end 1) runs in the direction of the longitudinal axis of the boot-j ack, curving sidewise along the recess of foot-rest A, corresponding to the shape of the heel, bending near its end toward the inside, and then sidewise, terminating in an upright slightly-inclined link, (1. A face-plate, O, at the lower side of foot-rest A, is rigidly connected by suitable screws to the same, and corresponds in shape with its recessed end and jaws B, securing them thereon, and giving them steadiness in their lateral motion. Face-plate O is bent under a right angle, to produce, in connection with foot-rest A, the proper inclination to the boot-jack when used. The metallic rod frame D is pivoted sidewise to the foot-rest A, at e, bent in the shape of a lengthened U, and passed through the inclined links d of jaws B. Its curved front part passes over the front part of the foot, and the upward action of the same lifts the rod frame D in links ti, and causes the jaws B to gripe the heel of the boot, so that the same can be easily drawn ofi.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The boot-jack, consisting of foot-rest A, with jaws B, pivoted and secured thereto by washer-plate a, and face-plate O, in combination with rod frame D, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The jaws B, having inclined link (1 at curved front end, and rectangular rear end I) pivoted to foot-rest A, as set forth.
