Specification. Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 2'7, 1921.
Application filed March 3, 1921. .Serial No. 449,318.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Anrouso Hnnmo, a citizen of Chile, S. A., and a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reversible Typewriter-Type, of which the following is a s ecification.
he principal purpose of this invention is to provide novel and ractical means for enlarging the range an $00 e of characters on any type bar machine wit out increasing the number of key levers or changing the machine in any manner other than substituting improved type bars for certain of the common style and the use of special type reversibly and removably engaged thereto.
Another object is to provide a form of type, and typebar head used in connection therewith, that conform to the standard type of the machine in proportions, dimen- SlOIlS weight and all essential characteristics, but which are so arranged as to double the character capacity of the machine.
A further object is in the provision of such devices in forms which present no difficulties in manufacture, assemblage or operation, the type and bar being essentially simple and cheap, strong and durable, and easily reversed when desired by the fingers.
These objects are attained by the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which 2- .liigure 1 is a front elevational view of a type made in accordance with the invention, as applied to a conventional form of type Fig. 2 is a side elevational view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a perspective viewof the same showing the type carrying element in a partially reversed position.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the type block in detail looking from the under side.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the type back retaining means in detail.
Fig. 6 is a side elevational view of the type block as applied to an Underwood type bar, drawn to a reduced scale.
Stated in general terms, the invention consists in forming an open or hollow head on any st le of type bar, the head conforming in thic ness with the width of the type block and drilling the head diagonally at approxi mately forty-five degrees from its face.
The type block, which is of integral construction, presents two branches disposed at right angles, one of the branches bearing on its outer face the number of characters carried by the ordinary type of the machine; as for instance in a single shift typewriter, each type block carries two characters, as the upper case or capital and lower case or small letter, as the N and n shown.
The other branch carries in a similar man ner any two other characters, as the English pound sterling and. paragraph marks, although obviously any preferred characters may be used.
Extending centrally between and from the junction of the branches is a cylindrical stem suited to engage the drilled hole in the type bar head and provided near its end with an annular recess in which is received the forked end of a curved fiat spring disposed within the opening in the head and having its opposite end shaped to partially encircle the stem, bearing against the inner wall of the opening.
Thus the spring tends to draw the branches of the type block snugly against the upper and front faces of the type bar head, but permits the stem to be withdrawn in reversing the relative position of the type block branches and it can be bodily removed in dismounting the block.
' Referring now more particularly to the drawings in detail, the numeral 10 designates the shank of a conventional type bar, such for instance as is used in the Remington machines, provided with a guide spur 11 and having a thickened head 12 extending to the front.
In Fig. 6, the Underwood type bar 10 is formed with a like head and it is to be noted that these heads, when the type block is in position, extend outward precisely the same distance as those of standard construction.
The lower, front corner 14 of the head is square while the upper front corner 15 is curved, presenting two. flat faces 16 and 1.7 at a right angle to each other, the central. portion of the head being removed, forming a diagonally disposed, oblong opening 18, reducing weight and providing space for purposes farther on apparent.
' A hole 19 is drilled through the curved" upper corner 15 midway in the thickness of the head, the hole bisecting the opening 18 and extendin as at 19, into, but not through, the ower rear corner of the head holes 19 end 19 e id when on e near its junction with the bar, the axis of the hole being at forty-five degrees from the seating surfaces 16 and 17.
The type block consists of two elongated rectangular members 20 and 21, alike in all their dimensions and bearing on their ex;- posed outer feces type characters as indicated Thus for machines h* 7 actor on. each key leren one C appear on each face; 7' chine is used two ch: double shift machine 'llijeo each face are reouired.
e chsr act r old e shift mm and or 2i L, 1 Clli: deter s on It is to be um *rstood that in all cases the type characters agree with hose used "1 to the machine on one of the faces while o the other face additional. charmer fractions, symbols etc thereby doubling the c chine and ale sting it and like purposes a: conver' A solid round stem is to; united at the junction of the b stern being so located as to t Slll ice and having a concave opposite end 2e engaging the body of the stem 2%, the outer srrtzice ot the spring abutting the Wall of the opening; ill such manner as to press the stem inwardly forcing the branches against their sent a In operation, the ordinary cha acter on the type branch are used in the customary 1112111- ner by striking their correspendingkey lever; when the oddity-n. are required the type bar is 'eised into position to grasp the type block by the fingers, and reversed in position, as if in 3, whereupon by relee the blocl is drawn by the spring into oper With the additional charact s Thus it Will be seen the made in the machine eficeptsuhstl improved type hers "for those ori"; nished and that is practical (lQYl e (2172.01, of. fulfilling the several objects has been disclosed.
