DETACHAIBLE PLOWSHARE Specification of Letters Patent. t t 27, 1
I Application filed April 29, 1920. Serial No. 377,556.
declare the following to be a full, clear, and
exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The inventionrelates to detachable plow share ed es and has for its object to provide a plow s are edge wherein the edge is substantiall V-shaped in cross section and is provide with a V-shaped groove in its base for the reception of the V-shaped edge of' the low share, said edge having its channel s ightly deeper than the gripplng surface on the plow share so that the detachable edge may be driven on the plow share and frictionally held thereon by the spring action of the engaging flanges of the removable or detachable ed e. and simplify the detac able plow share ed e shown and described in my Patent 0. 1,307,790 dated June 24th, 1919.
A further object is to provide a detachable plow share edge, thereby providing means whereby when an ed e becomes dull or worn, the edgle may be easily and quickly removed from t e low share edge, so that a new edge may be orced into frictional engagement with the plow share edge.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention ma be made with the see c of what is claimed without departing rom the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings v Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a plow share showing the detachable plow share ig. 2 is av sectional view taken on line 2-20f Fig. 1. p

its center longitudina Also to improvecomplete plow share edge in its finished condition and ready to be applied to the share.
Referring to the drawings, the letter a deslgnates the plow as a whole, which plow comprises the mold board 6, the share 0 and the detachable share edge (5. The share a is of the conventional design and construction, but may be varied as desired. The de tachable share edge d is constructed from a single iece of sheet metal- 5 as shown in Fig. 3. his piece of sheet metal in cross section is constructed preferabl thicker in than the edge parts 7 so that when the sheet metal is bent longitudinall upon itself, the share edge will have su cient body and stren h to withstand the strain and work and a so the wear thereon. Where the sheet metal is designed to be bent longitudinally on itself, the upper'face of the sheet may be scored or provided vwith a longitudinal cut 8, which cut is V-shaped in cross section, to facilitate the bending of the sheet metal on itself. After the metal piece has been bent longitudinally-it is subjected to heat, sulficient for welding, shaping and drawing out purposes. The plow share edge, while in this heated condition, is gradually shaped as shown at 9 in Fig. 6 until that portion 9 will assume the finshed shape or contour 10 as shown in Fig. 7. While the share edge is being constructed or shaped in this manner, the fold or bend 11 of the share edge is being drawn to a thin edge portion as shown at 12 in Fig. 7, by means of successive percussive blows. After obtaining the thin edge portion 12 the Same may be suitably ground or otherwise machined until said edge portion is brought to a sharpened condition, shown at 13 in Fig. 7, which disclosed the finished detachable plow share edge. In constructing the plow share edge by bendin metal longitudinally upon itsel the longitudinally V-shaped channel 14 is formed the sheet longitudinally of plow share edge and is adapted to receive the V-shaped edge portion 15 of the plow share 0. Theflanges 14 of the plow share edge are so angled in relation to each other so that-when they are forced into engagement with the upper and lower surfaces of the plow share a they will frictionally engage and bind on said upper and lower surfaces thereby maintaining the edge on the plow share by the frictional engagement of the flanges 14:. The V-shaped channel 14 is dee er than the distance of engaging surf ces of the plow share and flanges 14 as shown at 14 so that the detachable plowshare edge when the fiangesl l thereof are forced onto the plow share edge, the frictional binding of said flanges 14 will not be limited by the engagement of the edge 16 of the plow share 0 with the bottom of the V-shaped channel 14.
It w1ll be seen that a detachable plowshare edge is provided which may be quickly applied or removed from the edge of a plow share and also one wherein the use of bolts, rivets or pine is eliminated.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is The combination with a plow share edge having a substantially straight portion and an outwardly and forwardly curved portion at its forward end, of a detachable plow ed e therefor, said detachable edge comprising a substantially V-shaped bar having a longltudinally disposed V-shaped channel extending throu hout the entire length of the detachable e ge, the flanges of said dotachable edge being so spaced that when the plow edge is forced into the V-shaped channel, said flanges will frictionally engage the upper and lower faces of the plow share so as to hold the detachable edge thereon, the.
