Be it known that I JAMES E. MCDADE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful `Improvements in Charts, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in charts, particularly ada ted for school work, and which are provide with a plurality of pockets extending across the same and adapted t0 receive and hold in alinement display cards having letters, words, numerals, or other characters printed thereon, by means of which words, sentences and the like, may be formed.

The primary object of my invention is to provide a chart of the general type referred to, which will be of simplified and inexpensive construction, consisting essentially of but two parts, one a foundation member of cardboard, or the like, and the other a sheet of some tough and durable material, preferably paper, the latter being folded or plaited So as to provide a pluralit of pockets and stretched over the face o the foundation member and secured to the back thereof along its side and referably also along the top and bottom, w ereby the doubling back of` said plaited sheet against the back of the foundation member and securing the same to said member particularly on the sides thereof, results in a strong and rigid structure. The securing of the plaited sheet to the backof the foundation member, particularly atits sides, tends toplace the plaits `under tension with the result that the pockets for the display cards are held taut and not permitted to sag or bulge outwardly whereby the sin le cards placed in the pockets are firmly hel upright in alinement with each other and against the chart and are not permitted to tiltforward or to shift laterall even when the chart is handled.

rlha invention consists in the novel constructions and arrangements, to be hereinafter described and claimed for carr ing out the above statedobject, and such other incidental objects as will appear from the following description.

Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that the chart consists essentially of a foundation member 6 and a sheet of material 7 which is folded to provide a plurality of plaits 8 which extend across the sheet. The sheet 7 is longer and preferably also wider than the foundation member and is placed thereon so that a portion 9 at each side and a portion l0 at the top and bottom will project beyond the same. 9, 9 and 10, 10 and preferably also the main portion of the plaited sheet are then secured to the back and front, respectively, of the member 6 by any suitable means, for example, an adhesive material. v

Rigidity in a device of this sort is `very desirable, otherwise the pockets for the display cards will be loose and the cards will not be held upright against the chart and in alinement with each other. Since the plaited sheet of material is made to extend around the lateral edge of the foundation member, maximum rigidity for any given weight of material used is obtained, particularly in the direction of its plaits, and the plaits are held taut against the main portion of the sheet, there being no tendency for the pockets resulting from this construction to sag or bulge outwardly. In this construction the display cards when placed singly in the pockets are rmly held in alinement with each other and in an upright position against the chart, there being no tendency for them to tilt forward or to shift laterally even when the chart is handled. When the sheet 7 is made wide enough to provide the portions 10 at the top and bottom and these ortions are secured to the back of the foundation member the construction is vfurther rigidified. This also gives the chart a more finished appearance as there are no raw eX- posed edges on the face of the chart.

I preferably provide a back member 11 which is substantially of the same size as the foundation member and which is secured thereto and over the projecting folded portions 9 and l() by any suitable means, for example, an adhesive material. This further aids in rigidifying the construction and effectively prevents the projecting folded portions 9 and l0 from working loose.

lt Will be apparent from the foregoing description that the chart is of very simple construction. The cost of manufacturing it is very low compared to similar devices of the prior art, since there are fewer parts to put together and the parts, because of the construction described, may be made of rela tively light-Weight material.

I claim:

l. A chart of the class described foiI hold ing a plurality of displayY cards, comprising 'a foundation member, a sheet of material folded so as to provide a plura ity of plaits extending across the same, said sheet being greater in length in the direction of the plaits than said member and placed on said member so that a portion at both ends thereof, with respect to that direction, pro jects beyond` said member, said sheet being stretched, in the direction of the plaits, over said member, the projecting portions of said sheet being folded around the corresponding edges of said member against the baclr thereof, and means to secure the projecting folded portions of said sheet to the back of said member, t whereby the display cards When placed singly back of said respective plaits are firmly held upright against the chart and in alinement with each other.
