WILLIAM A. MOONEY, 0F RICHMOND, VIRGINIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD T0 WILLIAM I. MAYO, OF RICHMOND, VIRGINIA.
PACKAGING-MACHINE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 27, 1921.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. MOONEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packaging- Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in machines for packaging cigarettes and more particularly to means for controlling the feed of the cigarettes,--one object of the invention being to provide simple and efficient means for stopping the feed of cigarettes when the wrapping foil for the packages breaks or becomes distorted or when a cigarette breaks; my improvements being such as to enable the operator to use both hands in readjusting the foil.
A further object is to so construct the feed belt operating and controlling devices that said belt may be readily adjusted to a small or to any necessary degree to take up slack when the cigarettes fail to lie properly on said belt.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a cigarette packaging machine. Fig. 2 is a view at right angles to Fig. 1, and Figs. 3, 4 and 5 are detail views.
1 represents a suitable frame upon which a hopper 2 is mounted and the latter con tains a feed wheel 3,-al1 of whi h may be of any preferred construction. Wheels 4, 5, are mounted at respective ends of the horizontal portion of frame 1 and a feed belt 6 passes over these wheels so as to be disposed in position to receive cigarettes from the hopper 2. A shaft 7 on which the feed belt wheel 5 is located, has secured thereto a toothed clut h member 8 to cooperate with a similar clutch member 9 mounted loosely on the shaft. These clutch members are provided with a considerable number of teeth (each of said members having, prefer ably, about forty teeth), for a purpose hereinafter explained. The clutch member 9 is rigid with one end of a sleeve 10 mounted freely on the projecting end portion of the shaft '7 and at one end carries a sprocket wheel 11. T he shaft 7 projects beyond the outer end of the sleeve 10 and is provided with a head 12 between which latter and the end of the sleeve, :1 spring 13 is located to normally press said sleeve in a direction to cause engagement of the clutch member 9 with the clutch member 8. The sleeve 10 is provided with a groove 14 which receives the forked upper end of a shift lever 1.5, the lower end of the latter being pivotally connected with a bracket 16 projecting from the lower portion of the framework.
The lower or depending portion of the framework 1 provides a chute 17 through which the cigarettes, discharged from the feed belt, are conveyed to the packaging receptacle (not shown).
A stop device 18 is pivotally supported by the depending portion of the framework and comprises two arms 19, 19, connected together at one end and at their free flaring ends provided with pins 20 to enter the lower portion of the chute 17 to stop passage of cigarettes to the packaging devices when the wrapping foil becomes broken or dis rupted. The stop device 18 also includes a cross member 21 having sockets in its ends to receive the pointed inner ends of screws 22 passing through the walls of the depending portion of the framework and in this mannor the said stop device is pivotally supported. The stop device 18 is also formed With an upwardly projecting arm 23 which may be integral with the arms 19. The upwardly projecting arm 23 of the stop device normallyrests against one side of a cam block 24 secured to a shaft 25.mounted in the depending portion of the framework and the pins 20 carried by the depending arms 19 of the stop device are normally disposed in the position shown in Fig. 1. The shaft 25 is provided at one end with a hand lever 26 and near its outer end a cam 27 is secured in position to engage the shift lever 15.
It sometimes happens that the cigarettes will not be properly spaced on the feed belt and may get out of proper relation to each other and in order to remedy this, it is necessary to move the feed belt by hand. For this purpose the shaft 7 is provided with a hand wheel 28 and by providing clutch members, such as 8-9, with a large number of small teeth, the feed belt may be moved slightly (corresponding to the thickness of a single cigarette or it may be moved any necessary greater distance.
The feed belt is driven by sprocket chain from any convenient source of power, passing; over the sprocket wheel 11.
l' -Jhen the wrapping foil becomes broken, distorted or misplaced, the operator will move the shaft 25 by means of the hand lever 26 and thi will cause coiiperation of the cam block at with the upwardly projectmg arm 23 of the stop device 18 to so operate said step device as to cause the pins 20 to enter the chute 1'7 and thus stop the further passage of i -g'arettes from said chute to the packaging crevices. The same operation of the shaft 25 will cause the cam 27 to turn and, by engagement of said cam with the shaft lever 15, the latter will be caused to move outwardly and shift the sleeve 10 on the shaft 7, thus separating the clutch memher 9 from the clutch member 8 and stopping the operation of the feed belt.
Various slight changes might be made in the details of construction of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof or limiting its scope and hence I do not wish to restrict myself to the precise details herein set forth.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. In a packaging machine, the combination with a feed belt and a chute, of a stopdevice cooper-able with the chute, clutch devices for the feed belt, and manually operable means cooperable with said stop device and said clutch devices for operating both simultaneously.
2. In a packaging machine, the combination with a feed belt, clutch devices for controlling the operation of the same, and a chute, of a stop device coiiperable with the chute and having an arm, a manually operable shaft, a device carried by said shaft, and cooperable with said arm of the stop device for operating the latter, and means for controlling the operation of said clutch devices.
3. In a packaging machine, the combination with a feed belt, clutch devices for the same, a shift lever for said clutch devices, and a chute to receive articles from said feed belt, of a stop device cob'perable with said chute, a manually operable shaft provided with a part to operate said stop device, and a cam carried by said shaft for operating the shift lever to stop the feed belt when said step de 'ice is OPCTZttQLl.
4-. In a packaging, machine, the con'ibination with a feed belt, a chute to receive articles therefrom, and a. shaft carrying one of the wheels for the feed belt, of a sleeve mounted loose on said shaft, a clutch member carried by said sleeve and having a multiplicity of teeth, a clutch member secured to said shaft and having a multiplicity of teeth to mesh with the teeth of the first men tioncd clutch member, a. manually operable member secured to said shaft, manually operable means for shifting: said sleeve and clutch member thereon. and means on said sleeve to receive a driving member.
In a packaging; machine. the combination with a frame having a horizontal and depending portion, a feed belt mounted in the horizontal portion of said :lrame, and a depending chute in the depending portion of said frame. of a shaft carryingone of the wheels for the feed belt, driving means, clutch devices between said driving means and said shaft, :1 stop device pivot ally mounted in the depending); portion of the frame and having a plurality of arms provided with stop pins to enter said chute, a manually operable shaft, a cam on said shaft for operating said stop device, a shift lever for the clutch devices, and a cam carried by said manually operable shaft for operating said shift levers.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
IVILLIAM A. M()( )NEY. lVitnesses E. V. FANIsHoL'r, ISABELLE IIARRISON.
