AM PH UTO-LI'IHOQRAPH I 0 C0 NY I OSBURNEIS PROCESS) UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE SWEET, OF DANSVILLE, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN WHEELWRlGHT-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,094., dated June 17, 1873; application filed May 21, 1872.
- specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a machine for fitting fellies for wheels, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
Inorder to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure 1 is a plan view, and Fig. 2 a side elevation of my machine.
A represents an L-shaped frame, of any suitable dimensions, and supported upon legs or other convenient supports. Upon'the frame A, at the angle, is pivoted a dial-plate, B, provided at its outer edge with notches w a", at equal distances apart, and corresponding in number with the number of spokes in the wheel. To this dial-plate B are bolted arms 0 0, corresponding with the number of spokes required, and these arms are connected near their outer ends by a circle D. On the under side of each arm 0, at the outer end, is a bar, a, sliding in guides b b, and provided at its outer end with upward-projecting teeth 01 i. This bar is operated by means of a cam-lever,
,E, the whole forming a clamp for holding the rim or felly to be fitted to the ends of the arms 0 G. On one end of the frame A is a sliding carriage, G, moved back and forth by a lever, H, and carrying longitudinally a revolving arbor, d, with anger e for boring the felly for the spokes. 0n the other end of the frame A is another sliding carriage, G, moved back and forth by a lever, H, and carrying transversely a revolving arbor, d, with circular saw I, for sawing off the rim. The revolving-dial B is held at the proper points for the auger e to bore the holes for the spokes by means of an elbow-lever, J, pivoted to the frame, and provided with a tooth, g, which is thrown into the notches m successively by means of a spring, f, operating on the other end of the lever.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The sliding bar a, with teeth t i, sliding in the guides b b on the arm 0, and operated by means of the cam-lever E, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The elbow-lever J with point :1 and spring f, operating in combination with the notched dial B, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
3. The combination, with the dial B, its arms 0 and circle D, and its toothed sliding bars a operated by the cam-levers E, of the sliding saw andanger carriages G G, all mounted upon the L-shaped frame A, and operated substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 21st day of February, 1873.
GEORGE SWEET.
