Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Deze. 29, ritmi.
Application filed February 3, 1920. Serial No. 355,966.
To atl whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, ROBERT S'rooir, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the city ot Sandusky, in the county or' Erie and State of hio, have invented a new and usernul Improvement in Bottle-Caps, ot' which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in bottle caps and has for its object to provide a detachable closure for bottles, which is simple and inexpensive to manufacture; which will etciently seal the neck of a bottle when applied thereto, and which may be applied to and removed 'from the bottle innumerably without destroying its usefulness.
El practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure l represents a plan view ont my improved cap as applied to a bottle.
l-Tig. 2 represents a front elevation of the same.
F ig. 3 represents a plan view with the parts in position to remove the cap.
Fig. 4l represents a front elevation of the same.
Fig. 5 represents a vertical section taken in the plane of the line V-V of F ig. 2, looking in the direction oi' the arrows.
Fig. 6 represents a detail horizontal section taken through the ring controlling device, with the parts in the position shown in `Figs. l, 2 and 5, and
Fig. 7 represents a similar view with the parts in the position corresponding to l*1 igs. 3 and d.
The bottle to which my improved cap is applied is provided with an annular bead denoted by l, formed at the mouth ot' the bottle, and an annular recess 2, on the neck 3, of the bottle immediately below the bead.
rlhe cap il is formed with a depending flange 5, which has a series of lingers 6, arn ranged to be bent to receive and retain, in position thereon, a resilient ring 7. This ring 7 is developed into arms 8, 9, which efe tend laterally from between two lingers and parallel to each other. A disk l0 is mounted to rotate upon the arm 8, and has in its lace an arcuate slot ll, arranged eccentrically with respect to the arm 8. T he arm 9 is held in the slot 1l, by means of an enlarged head l2, and moved in the slot toward and away trom the arm S by the rotation of the disk.
The ring '7 is normally expanded to hold the lingers a slight distance away from the recess 2, when the cap is placed in position on the bottle, so that as the arm 9 is drawn toward the arm 8 by the slot ll in the rotatable dish l0, the ring will be contracted, thereby causing the lingers to be pressed inwardly into the recess 2. rlhe interior diameter of the ring and ngeis is approximately less than the exterior diameter ot the bead l, on the neck of the bottle, so that as the cap is forced downwardly on the bead l, the fingers and ring will expand slightly until they pass into the recess 2.
A. tight closure is effected between the mouth or" the bottle and the cap, by means of a dish shaped washer 13 of corlr or other yielding material, which will be pressed tightly over the mouth of the bottle by the contraction of the ring and fingers engaging the lower edge or" the bead, as shown in Figs. 2 and 5.
The cap may be removed from the bottle by rotating the dislr l0 clockwise, which allows the arm 9 to move tothe left in the slot ll, and away from the armV 8, which movement of the arm 9 is actuated by the expansion of the resilient ring 7. rlhis expansion of the ring 7, draws the ngers away from the walls ot the recess and with a slight upward pressure on the cap, the iingers and ring will be brought into engagement with the bead and gxpanded a slight distance to pass over the ead.
lhe disk l0, in the present Jform, is cupped, as shown at 1st, and may be closed by a plug l5, to conceal the ends of the arms 8, 9.
The disk and arms may also be used asa convenient means by which the cap may be lifted from the bottle.
lt is obvious that various changes may be resorted to in the iorm, construction and ar rangement ot the parts, without departing from the spirit and scope ot my invention; hence l do not intend to be limited to the details herein shown and described, except as they may be included in the claims.
What l claim is:
l. A bottle cap having depending fingers, a resilient ring carried by said lingers developed into arms extending laterally therefrom and parallel to each other, and a disk rotatably tiXed on one arm and having a slot for the reception of the other arm, said slot being arranged'eccentrically with respect to the pivot, whereby the rotation ot said disk will move the arms toward and away from Y each other and contract and expand the ring and fingers.
2. A bottle cap having depending fingers, a resilient ring carried by said lingers developed into arms extending laterally therefrom and parallel to each other, a cup-shaped disk rotatably i'iXed on one arm and having a slot `for the reception of the other arm, said slot 10 being arranged eccentrically with respect to 12th day of January7 1920. i
