ANTHONY C. RU-GGIEBO, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
BOTTLE CAP.
Application led August 22, 1922. Serial No. 583,624.
To all wwfm. z'zf may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTHONY O'. RUoomno, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, Kings Co., New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bottle Caps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to bottle caps and has particular reference to flexible caps for general household use whereby a housewife or other user is enabled to provide air tight closures for varying size bottles or contain- ,ers to prevent spoiling of the contents.
I clearly illustrate my invention in the acf companying drawings which form part' of this specification, and in which drawings, similar referencev characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in lwhich- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my bottle cap in position foi-suse.
Fig. 2 is a central vertical section thereof. Fig. 3 is a top view of the cap in place. Fig. 4 is a detail of a clamp ring forming part of the invention.
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the cap proper with the wings projected.
Fig. 6 is a detail of a modified form of clamp ring.
vReferring to the drawings 10 designates a bottle having the usual neck 1l, to which my cap 12, is applied, and in the form of construction shown, there is provided a stiff .metallic discpiece 13, to which are hinged as at 14 a plurality of wings 15, composed of soft pliable metal such as lead,` soft tin o\ the like, which will readily assume any desired shape or angle and remain as put.
The central d1sc 13, has vulcanized, or otherwise secured thereto, a soft rubber hood 16, adapted to be stretched over the neck of 'a container and to closely contract thereon to' form an airtight seal, after which the Wings 15, are folded down around said hood into overlapping relation each with its neighbor, after which a clamp ring 17, is applled and tightly clamped in place as shown, to secure an absolutely air tight seal around the neck of the` bottle as will be readily understood.
The clamp ring 17, as best shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings, comprises a body portion 18, provided at one end with a tongue 19 having spaced perforations 20, said tongue being projected into a channel 21,forined in the opposite end of the body portion, and locked in clamped position by a spring controlled pin 22.
In Fig. 6,1 have shown a modified form of clamp ring, in which the tongue 191, is formed with teeth 201, which engage a spring dog 221.
In the proportion of the parts shownin the drawings it will be seen that containers having necks larger than the one shown may be capped and hermetically sealed by reason of the elasticity of the hood 16, and flexibility of the wings 12, the range of usage is governed by the size of the central stiff disc 13. The user should have at hand about 3 sizes of caps-say for instance, a cap with a half inch central disc, one having a one inch disc, and a thirdV7 provided with an inch and a half dise and these three sizes, it is thought, would furnish a range of flexibility sufficient for all normal conditions of use.
What I claim is 1. A bottle cap comprising an elastic hood to enclose the neck and mouth of a bottle,l
a disc made 4fast with said hood, flexible wing members hinged to said disc and adapted to be folded down over said hood, and a clamp ring bearing on said wing members for the purpose s eoified.
2. In a bottle cap, a sti central disc, an elastic hood made fast thereto, wings hinged to the periphery of said disc, a clamp ring adapted to be positioned over the wings, said ring comprising a body portion having at one end a tongue with locking stops, and at v the other end a channel to receive saidtongue anda device to engage said stops as shown. In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification this 9th day of August, 1922. 4
ANTHONY o. RUGGIERO.
