Beit known that 1, WILLIAM F. BoUoHii, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Lancaster, county of Erie, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Driving Dynamos from Car-Axles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to driving means, and particularly to means for directly driving a dynamo from the axle of a railway oar.
An object of my invention is-to simplify the dynamo drive mechanism 'at the same time securing all the advantages of a belt drive without the disadvantage, among others, of breakage of belt.
Another object of my invention is that the driving mechanism is mounted "on the truck whereas the dynamo is mounted on the car body, and simple and rugged meansv are provided on the car axle for propelling the driving means as will be more fully explained in the following specification taken 1nconnection with the accompanying drawings which form a part of said specification, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in section showing the truck, driving-means and dynamo.

In the drawings, the usual 'oar wheels 1 are provided and are mounted on axle 2. The
' axle 2 carries a suitable driving means 3 upon which is carried a flexible belt 4. This belt may be of any well known construction, but that shown 1s the Morse chain drive. Parallel to the axle 2 is a jack shaft 5 carried and supported by the truck. This'jack shaft is pivoted on trunnions 6 in a frame'member 7, one endof which is carried by the transom 35 of the truck and the other end of which is carried by the end sill 36 of the truck. casion may require. The shaft 5 is adjusted and held in position by means of a flanged nut 10 ,whichis screwed onto a member 11, which engages a bearing 12 uponthe end of the shaft 5. The bearing to which the member 11 is attached is held by guides 13, which cooperate-with the member 14 mounted on the truck. I
- By reason of the flanges on the 'nut 10 engaging withthe H-member 15, the shaft 5 is. moved in the proper direction by properly moving the nut 10 by any suitable means such as for instance inserting a rod in the holes 16, as will be apparent from Fig. 3. It will be noted thatthe adjusting means are placed upon one side of the pivotal axis 6, whereas the driving gears, aswill be pres-. eriltly explained, are mounted on the other s1 e.
' Mounted on. the shaft 5 is a gear or pulley "which cooperates with the belt 4 driven from the car axle. The gear or pulley mounted on the shaft 5 is not visible in any of the figures of the drawing and this member may take any usual or desired form and be of the required dimensions withrelation to the means on the vdriving axle to give the proper speed. Mounted on the shaft 5 is a bevel gear 17 which meshes with a bevel gear 18' mounted on the shaft 19. Surrounding the gears 17 and 1 8 is a housing 20 which is carried-by the trunnions 6 and so arranged as ,to move around the pivotal axis with the shaft 5. The shaft 19 has bearings in the housing 20 to hold the gears 17 and 18 in proper relation to each other. The shaft 19 together with the shaft 21, which extendsthrough an opening in the floor 38, and shaft 22 and the universal joints 23 and 24 constitute the dynamo propeller shaft for the purpose of transmitting the driving power from the jack shaft 5 to the dynamo "shaft 25. The universal joints 23 and 24: are connected with the shafts 19, 21 and 22 respectively in the ordinary way. Each of these universal joints has a casing 26 surroundin the same and also a suitable arrangement 2? for completely inclosing the joints and for the primary purpose of excluding dust andretaining suitable lubricant. By reason of the inclusion of the universai joints in the propeller shaft, it is not material that the dynamo shaft be in any particular fixed position with respect to the jack shaft. connected at one end with a socket member 28 into which extends an extension 29 on the end of the shaft 21. The shaft 21 fits snugly but movably within the socket member 28 so as to provide for relative up and down movement between the shafts 19 and 21.

The housings 20 and 32 are each provided with a cap 37 covering an opening through which suitable lubricant may be admitted for the gears.
From the foregoing it will be evident that with the arrangement above described, means are provided for driving the dynamo from the car axle. The driving means are pivotally connected with the truck and all the driving apparatus is carried by the truck except a single pulley or ear, which is mounted on the car axle. ile the dynamo propeller shaft has been shown as extending substantially vertically from the jack shaft, the invention is not limited to that particular arrangement because the ar-.
rangement shown in the accompanying drawings is that of a so-called train lighting system as distinguished from a car lighting system where there is an equipment on each individual car. It is apparent that suitable and "simple changes could easily be made to adapt the arrangement shown to a car lighting system.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a car and its axle, a pivoted' ack shaft parallel with said axle, said shaft having a journal bearing pivoted to swing about an axis at. right angles to the shaft, means on one side of the pivot for driving the jack shaft from the axle, a dynamo, a propeller shaftfor driving the dynamo, and means on the jack shaft on the other side of the pivot for driving said propeller shaft.
2. In a device of'the character described, the combination of an axle, a pivoted jack shaft parallel with said axle, said shaft having a journal bearing pivoted to swing about an axis at right angles to the shaft, a chain belt on one side of the pivot for driving the jack shaft from the axle, a dynamo, a proshaft.

3. In a device of the character described, the combination of a car and its axle, a dynamo for driving the dynamo from the axle comprising a pivoted counter shaft normally parallel to said axle and pivoted to swing on an axis at right angles to the axis of said shaft, and carried by the car truck, a chain belt on one side of the pivot for driving the counter shaft from the axle, a gear on the counter shaft, on the other side of the pivot a propeller. shaft for the dynamo, a gear on the propeller shaft in mesh with the counter shaft gear, a housing for said gears acting also as a support for said propeller shaft,
and means for adjusting said counter shaft around its pivot.
4-. In an arrangement of the class 'described the combination of a car and its axle, a jack shaft normally parallel to the axle, a bearing for the jack shaft pivoted to swing about an axis at'right angles to the shaft, another bearing for the jack shaft and means for movlng it to adjust the position of, the shaft-with respect to the axle, flexible means for driving the shaft from the axle, adynamo and means for driving the dynamo from the jack shaft.
5. In. an arrangement of the class described the combination of a car and its axle, a jack shaft.normally parallel to the axle, a bearing for the jack shaft pivoted to swing about an axis. at right angles to the, shaft, another bearing for the jack shaft and means for moving it to adjust the position of the shaft with respect to the axle, said bearings being supported on the car truck, flexible means for driving the shaftv from}. the axle, a dynamo supported by the car body, and shafting with universal joints for driving the dynamo from said jack (i.
