Description

UNITED STATES PATENT GEEIoEc OWEN OSBORNE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO THOMAS DOLAN 8a OO., OF SAME PLAGE.
IMPROVEMENT IN PRESSING `HOS|ERY.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,068, dated J une 17, 1873; application filed April 4, 1873.
the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to produce a series of ribs uponhosiery composed of plain knitted fabric and this object I attain by subjecting the same to pressure between heated dies when stretched upon a pressing-board A, the opposite sides of which are recessed as shown in Fig. l, so as to form a series of alternate grooves, and ribs c and b, the stocking when removed from the board presenting the appearance illustrated in Fig. 2.
The board or former A is of the dat sectional form shown in Fig. 3, and is precisely similar to an ordinary pressing-board, except that it has the grooves and ribs a and b. The surfaces of the latter being flush with the surface ofthe board as shown.
The stocking is turned inside out and stretched upon the board, and is then subjected to pressure between the ordinary heated dies, that portion of the fabric of the same which is directly over the ribs b, being compressed and attened while the intermediate portions enter the grooves a and are not subjected to pressure, so that when the stocking is removed from the board and turned inside out it will present the appearance illustrated in Fig. 2, the portions of the same whichentered the gooves in the board, and were not subjected to pressure, forming a series of projecting ribs w.
I claim as my inventionl. The within-described process of producing ribs upon hosiery of plain knitted fabric, by subjecting the same to pressure between heated dies when stretched upon a grooved and ribbed pressing-board.
2. The grooved and ribbed pressingboard, constructed as herein described for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
OWEN OSBORNE.
