T 0 all to ham it may concern Be it known that l, HARRY S. HART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented cert-am new and useful Improvements in Dump-Car-Door- Operating Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
This inventionrelates to operating mechanism for dump car doors.
The object of this invention is to simpli'ly and improve operating mechanism for dump car doors in a manner to meet the requirements torsuccessiul commercial use.
This inventioi'i is illustrated on the accompanying sheets ofdrawings, in which Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of adump car embodying my invention; and
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same car, the section being taken in the plane of line 22 of Fig. 1.
The various novel features of the invencated intermediate the trucks and at a lower level than the portions 18. These floor portions 13 and 14: extend outwardly and downwaidly from the center of the car, or substantially from the center of the car toward the sides of the car.
To normally close the dumping opening between the sides 10 of the car and the lower edges of the stationary wl-shaped portion 13, l have provided vertically swinging dump doors 16 which preferably are horizontally pivotally connected along the lower edges of the sides 10 of the car. Likewise, to normally close the dumping opening between the sides of the ear and the lower edges of the stationary floor portion let, relatively larger intermediate vertically swinging dump doors 17 are provided which preterably are horizontally pivotally connected at their upper edges adjacent the lower :terent horizontal planes. This door open ating mechanism includes an operating shalt 18 being carried by the relatively small doors 1% located over the trucks, the shaft 18 preferably being continuous from oneendoif the car to the ot ier, so that it extends not only the length. of the doors 16, but also the distance therebetween, or in other words extends also the full length of the intermediate dump doors 17. It will be apparent, however, from the description to follow that this shaft need not extend the whole length ol the intermediate doors 17, but may be a split shalt or a plurality of shaft sections having merely an overlapping As shown the.

This operating shaft 18 is provided with one or more arms 19 fixed thereon, the free end of each of which is pivotally connected to one end of an intermediate link 20. the other end of which is piyotally connected to one end of lock or hooked member 21, the opposite end of which is pivoted at 22 to a fixed portion of the car frame, the function of the hooked member 21 being to lock the dump doors 1?) over the trucks in closed position, as shown at the left hand side of Fig. 2. similar lock or hooked member 23 in each case is pivotally connected at 24 to a fixed portion of the car frame and has for its function the locking of the associated intermediate dump door 17. in each case that the lower lock member 23 hooks over a projection 25 at the lower end of the associated intermed ate dump door it will be noted 16 over the trucks inclosed position. The lock members 21and 23 are connected by a link 26'whereby their operation, or in other words, their loclring and unlocking movements may be simultaneous.
Referring more particularly to the left hand side of Fig. 2, it will be noted that the dump doors 16 and 1 7, the lower edges of which cooperate with angle portions'at the outer edges 01 the floor portions 18 and 1a to form a tight seal, are in their closed positions, in which positions said doors are locked by the locking members 21 being hooked over the operating shaft 18 and the locking members 23 being hooked over the door projections 25'. At this point it will be noted also that the operating shaft 18 posi- V tively engages and presses the intermediate upon the dump doors 16 and 17 are free to open. In this connection it will be appreciated that the material in the car to be dumped will assist in a further opening movement of the doors. Assuming, however, that there is no material in the car to be dumped, a further rotation of the shaft 18 in the same direction will cause the shaft to move bodily outwardly from under the link 20 and out of engagement with the intermediate dump door 17 into the position shown at the right hand side of Fig. 2, wherein the dump doors 16 over the trucks are in an oioen position for permitting a dumping action, and'the intermediate door 17 also in a position'to permit a dumping action, the intermediate dump door 17 be ing independent in this position of the other dump doors 16 and of the operating shaft 18.
In closing the dump doors 16 and 1 from an open position, as shown on the right hand side of Fig. 2, the shaft 18 is rotated in a manner to cause its fixed arm or arms 19 to rotate upwardly and outwardly, where upon the dump doors 16 over the trucks will be given a closing movement, it being understood that the operating shaft 18 under these conditions approaches the intermediate dump door 17. During this closing movement, when the shaft 18 passes into engage-- ment with the intermediate dump door 17, it will cause the latter also to take a closing movement, it being understood that during this operation the shaft 18 is rolling itself under the link 20 and under the locking member 21. Finally, the doors 17 with doorslfi are forced into a closed position, the last portion of the rotary movement of the operating shaft 18 causing the members 21 and 28 to swing downwardly into a lookingposition for holding the dump doors in such closed position. 7 1
It will be understood that any number or arms 19, links 20, looking members, 21 and 23, and links 28 may be provided along the length of the car, and that the equipment on both sides of the car is the same.
lt'is my intention to cover all modifications of the invention falling within the spirit and scope of the following claims.
I claim:
1. A car of the class described provided with a plurality of v rtically swingingdoors pivoted at the outer sides of the car, some of the doors havin their swinging edges in ditterent horizontal planesr'rom other associated doors, and means for actuating the doors by one operation, the actuation of one of said doors being dependent upon the actuation of another one of said doors.
2. A car or the class described provided with a plurality of vertically swingingdoors pivoted at the outer sides of the car, some of the doors having their swinging edges in different horizontal planes from other associated doors, and means for closing the doors by one operation, the closing of one of said doors being dependent upon the closing of another one of said doors.
3. A car of the class described provided with a plurality of verticaliv swinging doors pivoted at the outer sides of the car, some of the doors having their swinging edges in dilierent horizontal planes from other associated doors,and means for closing and looking all of the doors by one operation, the closing of one of said doors being le= pendent upon theclosing of another one oi said doors.

A car of the class described provided with a plurality of outwardly swinging side dump doors, some of the doors having their swinging edges in different horizontal planes from other associated doors, and means for actuating and changing the locking condition of the doors by one operation, the actuation of one of said doors being dependent upon the actuation of another one of sai doors.
6. In] afidump car, the combination of a plurality of doors, and a shaft carried by one of said doors and movable into engagement with another of said doors for actuating the latter.
7. In a dump car, the combination of a plurality of dump doors, a shaft carried by, one of said doors and movable into engagement with another one of said doors 10. In a dump car, the combination of as plurality of doors, inter-connected hook locking members for said doors, an operating shaft carried by one of said doors, and an operative connection between said operating shaft and one of said locking members for controlling the position of said doors.
11. In a dump car, the combination of a plurality of doors, inter-connected hook locking members for said doors, an operat ing shaft carried by one of said doors, an arm rigidly connected to said operating shaft, and an operative connection between said arm and one of said locking members whereby the movement of said doors is controlled and whereby the locking condition of said doors also is controlled.
12. In a dump car, the combination of a plurality of doors the lower edges of which are in different horizontal planes, a locking member for the lower edges of each of said doors, a connection between said locking members whereby they may be actuated sinnilt-aneously, and an operating shaft operatively connected to said locking members through the actuation of which the locking condition of said doors is controlled.
18. in a dump car, the combination of a plurality of doors the lower edges of which are in different horizontal planes, a locking member for the lower edges of each of said doors, a connection between said locking members whereby the same are simultaneously operated, and an operating shaft carried by one of said doors and operatively connected to said locking members for actuating the latter, said operating shaft at times engaging another one of said doors for controlling its movement.

Ina dump car, t 1e combination of a pluralit-yof pivotally mounted dump doors, an operating shaft carried by one of said doors and movable into engagement with another of said doors for pressing the latter into closed position, a pivotally mounted locking member which in one position hooks over the shaft for locking one of said doors in closed position, an arm rigidly connected to said operating shaft and having a link connection with said locking member for transmitting movement to said doors, another pivotally connected locking member for locking another one of said doors in closed position, and an operating connection between said locking memberswhereby the same may be actuated by one operation.
16. In a dump car, the combination of a plurality of vertically swinging dump doors having their horizontal pivotal mountings in different horizontal planes, an operating shaft carried by one of said doors and movable into engagement with another of said doors for transmitting a closing movement thereto, a pivotally mounted locking member which in one position hooks over the shaft for locking one of said doors in closed posi tion and holding another one of said doors in closed position, another pivotally mounted locking member for holding said other door in closed position, an operative. connection between said locking members, an arm rigidly connected to said operatingshaft having a link connection with one of said locking members whereby the doors may have their locking conditions changed and operated by one operation.
17 A dump car provided with a plurality of swinging doors, and means mounted upon one of said doors for engaging the adjacent door whereby the latter door is closed by the operation of the former door.
18. A dump car provided with a plurality of swinging doors, an operating member mounted upon one of said doors, and means for bringing said operating member into engagement with an adjacent door by the operation of the said member.
19. A dump car provided with a plurality of swinging doors having their swingingl edges in different horizontal planes, a plurality of locking members mounted upon a stationary part of the car, a connection between said locking members, and means connecting one of said locking members with one of the doors, whereby said locking members are simultaneously operated by the operation of the door.
20. A dump car provided with a plurality of swinging doors having their lower edges in different horizontal planes, a plurality of locking members attached to a stationary part of the ear for engaging said doors at part of the car for engaging said doors at or near their lower edges, and means for or near their lower edges, and means operating said locking members. for simultaneously operating said locking 10 21.
