DUMP-DOOR-OPERATING MECHANISM.

T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, Hanna S. HART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dump-Door-Operating Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to operating mechanism for dump car doors. 7'
The object of this invention is to simplify and improve operating mechanism for dump car doors in a manner to meet the requirements for successful commercial operation. V
The invention is illustrated on the ac companying sheet of drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of a dump car embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken in the plane of line 2-2 of Fig.1; and,
Fig. 8 is a transverse sectional view taken in the plane of line 33 of Fig. 1.
The various novel features of my inven tion will be apparent from the following description and drawings and will be parappended claims. i
Referring-to the figures of the drawings, it will be noted that I have shown a dump car, the body of which includes sides 10, ends 11, and a floor 12, which in this particular instance includes stationary A- shaped portions 13 at the ends of the car over the trucks which include wheels 14. These A-shape'd portions include downwardly and outwardly sloping members 15 which extend from'the center of the car over the center sill 16 toward the sides of the car. Intermediate the ends of the car,
or intermediate the trucks, the floor includes stationary sloping members 17 which extend downwardly and inwardly from the sides of the car toward the center thereof, the lower edges of the member 17 terminating in longitudinal planes, including the truck wheels 14.
To normally close the dumping openings between the sides 10 ofjthe car and the lower edges of the A-shaped portion 13, I have provided vertically swinging dump doors 18, which preferably are horizontally pivotally connected along the lower edges of the-sides 10 of the car; These doors 18 preferably are angular in 'shape,'the upper portions thereof normally extending in a Specification of Letters Patent.

vprovided which extend downwardly and outwardly from the center sill 16 of the lower edges of said sloping members 17. These dump doors 19 are pivotally connected at 20 011 a horizontal pivot connection, whereby said doors may swing vertically. These doors preferably are straight throughout.
This invention has to do primarily with the operating mechanism for these dump doors, the lower edges of which lie in different horizontal planes. The door operating mechanism includes an operating shaft 21 at each side of the car preferably running the full length thereof and being connected to a stationarypart of the car. As shown, the operating shaft is mounted directly under the sloping floor portion 17 intermediate the trucks and extends under the lower edges of the dump doors 18 over the trucks. The operating shaft 21 on each side of the car is effective for actuating the doors 18 and 19 during one operation or, in other words, simultaneously. The operating connection between the operating shaft 21 and the dump doors 18 includes spaced arms 22 which are rigidly fixed to the operating shaft 21, there being a pin 23 extending between the outer ends of said arms. A link 24, one end of which is pivotally connected to a bracket 25 secured to the lower portion of the door 18, is pivotally connected to the arm 22 by a loose or sliding connection, including a slot 26 in the link 24 which slidably receives the pin 23 connecting the spaced arms 22. It will be noted that the link 24 is provided with a square looking notch 2?, which, when the door 18 is closed, as shown at the lefthand side of Fig. 2, receives the upper half of the operating shaft 21 for locking the side dump door 18 in locked position. To unlock the door 18 and move it into an open position, the shaft 21, as shown at the left-hand side of Fig. 2, is rotated in a counterclockwise direction, which causes the arm 22 rigidly connected therewith to move closed position.

Each of the links 31 intermediate its length is provided with a locking notch 32 which, when the door is in closed position, hooks over the shaft 21 for locking the dump doors 19 in locked position. The leftrhand dump door or doors in Fig.3 are in such lockedv position. To unlock said doors and open the same, the operating shaft shown at the leftdiand side in Fig 3, is moved in a countercloclnvise direction, which first causes the notched portion of the link 31 to disengage the shaft 21, the link 31 being moved about its lower end as a pivot. As soon as the notch is moved out of operating association with the shaft,
the dump doors 19 are swung into anbpen position as a result ofthe load in the car. Assuming, however that there is no load being dumped, the dump doors 19 will be positively opened by the inward thrust transmitted thereto by the arm 28, the doors 19 finally assuming an open position, as shown at the right-hand side of Fig. 3, in which case the arms 28 and links 31 lie. substantially in the same plane. To close the dump doors 19 the shaft is moved in the opposite direction, whereupon the doors are swung outwardly until their lower edges make a tight sealing jointwith the lower edges of the'fioor members 17, the last portion of. the rotative movement of the operating shaft causing the locking notch of the links 31 to closed position.
It will be understood that when the operating shaft on either side of the car is actuated, the doors over the trucks and intermediate the trucks are simultaneously actuated.
It is my intention to cover all modifications of'the invention falling within the spirit and scope of the following claims.
I claim:
1. In a dump car, the combination of a plurality of normally inclined vertically swinging dump doors over and between the trucks, an "operating shaft. mounted on a stationary part of the caratthe side thereof, armsrigidly connected'to said shaft, and links connecting said arms withsaid doors whereby the latter may be operated.
2. In a dump car, the combination of a plurality of normally inclined vertically swinging dump doors over andbetween the trucks, an operating shaft mounted on a stationary part of the car at the side. thereof, arms rigidly connected to'said shaft, and links connecting said arms with said doors whereby the latter may be operated and the locking condition of said doors changed. l

In a dump car, the combination'of a plurality of vertically swinging dump doors, those over the trucks extending downwardly and inwardly and those intermediate the trucks extending downwardly and outwardly, an operating shaft, and operating connections between said shaft and said doors including rigid links whereby said doors may be actuated, said links having locking portions which cooperate with said operating shaft for locking said doors in closed position.
8. In a dump car, the combination of a plurality of vertically swinging doors, the
doors over the trucks extending downwardly and inwardly and the doors between the trucks extending downwardly wardly, said doors having their swinging edges in different horizontal planes, an op-.
edges in different horizontal planes, an op-' erating shaft, and connections between said operating shaft and the lower edges of said doors for moving the swinging edges of said doors into closed position and for locking the said doors in closed position.
10. In a dump car, the comblnation of a normally inclined vertically swinging dump I door over a truck, an operating shaft mounted on a stationary part of the car inwardly from 'a side thereof, an arm rigidly connected to the shaft, and a link connecting the arm and door whereby the latter maybe operated.
11. In a dump car, the combination of a normally inclined swinging dump door over and out- I a truck, an operating shaft mounted on a stationary part of the car, an arm rigidly connected to said shaft, and a link connection between said arm and door whereby the latter may be operated.
12. In a dump car, the combination of a normally inclined swinging dump door over a truck, an operating shaft mounted on a stationary part of the car, an arm rigidly connected to said shaft, and a link connectionbetween said arm and door whereby the latter may be operated, said link having a locking portion for engaging the shaft to lock the door in a given position.
13. A car of the class described having sides and ends, the floor over the trucks comprising portions sloping downwardly and outwardly toward the sides of the car, outwardly swinging doors pivoted to the sides of the car cooperating with said stationary floor portions, the floor between the trucks comprising downwardly and inwardly extending stationary portions, downwardly and inwardly swinging doors pivoted at or near the center sill, cooperating with said downwardly and inwardly extending floor portions, an operating shaft, and con nections from saidoperating shaftto the downwardly and inwardly swinging doors for simultaneously operating the doors.
14:. A car of the class described having sides and ends, the stationary floor portion over thetrucks arranged to discharge the load downwardly and outwardly, the stationary floor portions between the trucks adapted to discharge the load downwardly and inwardly, downwardly swinging doors cooperating *ith said first named floor portions and inwardly swinging doors cooper atin g with the last named floor portions, and operating mechanism for simultaneously operating the downwardly and inwardly swinging doors.
